All-Russian contest for schoolchildren research projects “Junior-2016”

From 30 to 31, January 2016 the 19th All-Russian contest for schoolchildren research projects final has taken place in MEPhI. This year a robotics section has been added to existing ones (mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, biology).

“Junior” is a contest for schoolchildren research projects which at the same time is a qualifying event for the world's largest international pre-college science competition Intel ISEF which takes place in the USA. In 19 years since the establishment of the “Junior” it has become a platform to demonstrate the best projects of Russian schoolchildren and has a well-earned reputation of schoolchildren research projects contest – winning it proves the quality of the work and gives a chance to win in ISEF. In 19 years the juniors have won 80 prizes in the USA contest.

The best Russian lyceums participate in the “Junior”: the lyceums 1511 and 1523 of MEPhI Pre-University, "The Second School" lyceum, Chemistry lyceum 1303, MSU SESC, Information Technology lyceum 1533, St Petersburg lyceum 239, Nizhny Novgorod lyceum 38, Sarov lyceum 3, Ozersk lyceum 39, Chelyabinsk lyceum 31, Tambov lyceum 14, Irkutsk lyceum 2 etc.

This year there were 700 works for a qualifying event for the contest, 280 of which were chosen for the final. 124 communities have participated in the event including Russian cities and foreign ones. Some projects were from small cities and rural villages. The contest organisers MEPhI and Rosatom paid for each contestant’s room and meals throughout their participation.

There were a lot of competitions on Saturday, 30th January. At first there was a contest in mathematics, physics and computer science or biology and chemistry (depending on the project type). Then the participants showed their works to the contest jury. Some projects were shown distantly from Nizhny Novgorod in NNSTU. The winners were 15 participants from Moscow, Moscow Region, Kostroma, Volgodonsk, Krasnoe village. 43 people were awarded – schoolchildren from Moscow, Moscow Region, Nizhny Novgorod, Sarov, Novokuybyshevsk, Tomsk, Kostroma, Omsk, Dzerzhinsk, Barnaul, Novorossiysk, Zarechniy, Murmansk.

Among the Intel ISEF participants the following have been chosen:

Ilia Alexeev, St Petersburg № 564: “The Jacobi identity”,

Georgy Sizov and Stepan Chumakov, Moscow lyceum 1511: “The detector for registration of high-energy electrons and positrons based on measuring of synchrotron radiation in the Earth magnetic field”,

Tuzhilin Ilia, lyceum 1502: “Tactile device for obstruction identification”.

The winners were awarded on Sunday, 31st January.
