Department of Micro- and Nanoelectronics offers new device for detection of alpha radiation
20.01.2016

A group of scientists from the MEPhI Department of Micro- and Nanoelectronics has developed a unique device for the detection of alpha-radiation - remote indicator of alpha-radioactive contamination "Alpha A". The device works much more effectively than currently used for this purpose, the standard search devices.

Our scientists have set up a goal of creating highly sensitive wearable monitor, allowing remote (distance up to 0.5 m) to detect the presence of alpha-active nuclides on the surface of any profile – for example, on different hardware, clothing, shoes, plants, etc.

The method which is used in device is based on the detection of ions that occurs in the airions at the traces of alpha particles emitted by alpha-active nuclides.

The device can be used to evaluate the radiation hazards from technogenic accidents, to control the radiation situation at the enterprises of nuclear-energy complex, for radioecological monitoring of polluted territories, production waste, scrap metal, etc.
