SEC NEVOD creates muon hodoscope of new generation to monitor surrounding space
19.01.2016

In the Scientific-educational center NEVOD it has completed the development of an automated scintillation muon hodoscope of the new generation. The hodoscope can be used for monitoring and forecasting the near-earth space by the method of muon diagnostics, developed in MEPhI. A new approach to the study is realized on the dynamics of the development of heliospheric processes on the basis of analysis of spatial-time variations of the flux of cosmic rays recorded at the Earth's surface.

A new hodoscope contains narrow strips of plastic scintillator with light collector on the basis of WLS optical fibers and multianode PMT. The unit is formed from individual supermodules, each of which is a separate detector with an area of about 11 sq. m. This enables simply increasing the effective area by increasing the number of supermodules to improve the statistical accuracy.

The created muon hodoscope and developed technology of mass production allows a new level to approach the creation of a global network of muon hodoscopes for monitoring of the processes in near-earth space and near the heliosphere, as well as for their use in order to control the state of various objects.
