On the 15th of December 2015, the Rating Agency “Round University Ranking” (RUR) in partnership with the international company Thomson Reuters has published a ranking of the best universities in the world for 2015 in 6 subject areas.
The ranking represents 750 world's leading universities from 76 countries. In addition to the General ranking, universities were evaluated in four areas – teaching, research, internationalization and financial sustainability.
A press conference in TASS was attended by the editor of the Round University Ranking Oleg Soloviev, the Director of the Department of scientific research and intellectual property of Thomson Reuters Oleg Utkin, the head of the Department for expert support and the coordinator of the Project 5-100 Alexei Falaleev, the rector of MEPhI Mikhail Strikhanov, the editor of the national rating of universities Interfax and “Echo of Moscow” Alexei Chaplygin, the Vice-rector for research of People's Friendship University of Russia Nur Kirabaev, the Vice-rector of RANEPA Maxim Nazarov and the Acting Vice-rector for science of MAI Vyacheslav Shevtsov.
As representatives of the expert community noted, MEPhI has achieved two good results. First, the University became the best Russian university in the Natural Sciences (158th place in the world ranking), MSU is in second place in Russia (213), Saint Petersburg State University – in the third place (242), then the TSU – 4 (287), NSU – 5 (300), MIPT – 6 (307), KFU – 7 (333).
In addition, another important achievement of the University is the 41st place in the world in quality of teaching of Natural Sciences – also the best result among Russian universities.
“MSU and MEPhI are leaders in their subject areas and occupy first places in Russia”, said the editor of the Round University Ranking Oleg Soloviev. He noted that the international rating RUR is the only regularly updated global ranking of universities, which has Russian origin. “It relies on data from respected international company Thomson Reuters – an internationally recognized expert in the field of education and science”, said Oleg Soloviev, and added that all basic data is available in the information-analytical system InCites.
Commenting results of the Round University Ranking, the rector of MEPhI Mikhail Strikhanov emphasized the need of Russian universities to participate in global rankings, these, figuratively speaking, World Championships, which should be attended by the team of the best Russian universities.
MEPhI rector listed undoubted achievements, which became possible thanks to the Project 5-100, such as mass arrival of youth in science and education, strengthening of Russia as a platform for research activities of foreign scientists, and, finally, the unity of science and education, reached by many Russian universities, that meets modern international requirements.
