Total TV: prediction or reality?

On the 11th of November the Conference hall MEPhI has held a lecture in the framework of the “Academic readings of MEPhI”, which allows to understand the phenomenon of the most powerful and influential media of today – television.
This time the supervisor of Academic readings, academician Valery Tishkov invited the Dean of the Higher School of Television of MSU, Professor Vitaly Tretyakov. The topic of the lecture was “Fr om TV-religion of present to hypno-TV of the near future: how humanity is losing touch with reality”.
The anchorman told about some features of Russian TV and what awaits us in the future. “It was a social necessity to create television. This institute is needed in the society. It would be wrong to say that it is harmful. The question is about the proportion of positive and negative qualities within the system”. The journalist claims that today we are in a situation wh ere these qualities are in equal measures.
According to the expert, “any large system, which society needs, sooner or later begins to work mainly to satisfy its own selfish interests”. As a result, it’s a disaster which waits ahead. Vitaly Tretyakov expressed concern and worries about the future of television.
Students listened to a lecture on a topical and controversial theme with a great pleasure. The audience was anxious about such a categorical judgment of the Professor and gloomy conclusions about the development of television. Some of the listeners were interested whether television will die at all and whether institutions of society possess mechanisms of self-regulation.

Vitaly Tretyakov is a journalist, political scientist, author and presenter of a TV program “What to do? Philosophical conversations” on the TV channel “Culture”, the Dean of the Higher School of Television of MSU (2008-present), chief editor of a magazine “Political class” (2005-2009), General Director of the Fund for advancement of education in the field of journalism “Mediaology”.
