On the 21st of October National Research Nuclear University MEPhI has been officially visited by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Moscow Park Ro-byug. He was accompanied by the Vice President of Korean Nuclear Society, Professor at the University of Kyung Hee Whang Joo Ho and Scientific attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea Lee Se Gyoung.
The main theme of the meeting was to identify possible areas of cooperation in scientific and educational spheres between MEPhI and the Korean University Kyung Hee.
Anticipating an exchange of views, Park Ro-byug informed about the meeting with Deputy General Director of the State Corporation “Rosatom” Vyacheslav Pershukov the day before, where among others participants discussed issues of possible cooperation in research and educational activities in the field of nuclear technology. Vyacheslav Pershukov noted that MEPhI as a leading institution, which prepared highly qualified specialists for the nuclear energy, was a promising partner for cooperation.
In the welcoming speech the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea expressed his gratitude to the management of MEPhI “for the opportunity to get acquainted with the leading nuclear University of Russia” and expressed confidence that the visit would identify specific areas of cooperation between the University of Kyung Hee and MEPhI.
The Vice President of the Korean Nuclear Society Whang Joo-ho said that 15 universities prepared specialists for the Korean nuclear energy, including the University of Kyung Hee, and expressed great interest in sharing approaches to the educational process of Korean and Russian universities.
Introducing MEPhI, the Acting Dean of the Physico-Technical Faculty Georgy Tikhomirov noted that the University trained specialists in more than 40 key nuclear areas, providing, together with other supporting universities, about 80% of personnel for the State Corporation for atomic energy “Rosatom”. Now this Corporation successfully promotes nuclear technology around the world.
During the meeting, Georgy Tikhomirov proposes several options for consideration about cooperation within the Centre of Nuclear Energy MEPhI. The main feature of the specialists training on the basis of this Center is that it unites not only educational departments but also modern scientific laboratories, therefore undergraduate, master and PhD students have a unique opportunity to combine study with research activities that improves quality of education.
The theme was continued by the Vice-rector on Educational Affairs Elena Vesna. She noted that MEPhI had extensive experience in the development and implementation of programmes in nuclear field. So the University can offer unique opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation, among which is invitation of Korean scientists and teachers to read lectures, including remote one, academic and student exchanges, internships, distance learning programs, implementation of joint research projects.
After the official part of the event, representatives of diplomatic mission visited the Department № 2 “Automatics”, where looked at Functional-analytical simulator of NPP with VVER-1000 reactor.
Official representatives of the Republic of Korea noted the high level of educational and scientific developments in MEPhI, and expressed interest in developing cooperation with the University.
