The exhibition, dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry, has been held these days in Moscow Manege. In its framework students attend a series of lectures, where representatives of major departments and research centres of the MEPhI, as well as employees of industrial enterprises of the State Corporation “Rosatom” tell students about the status and prospects of nuclear power development.
On September 10 Moscow Manege received MEPhI students from Vietnam and Bangladesh, where they listened to two interesting lectures. The first was delivered by K.M. Ilyinsky, a senior engineer at the Saint-Petersburg “Atomenergoproekt”. Konstantin Mikhaylovich told about NPP-2006 – a project of new III+ generation NPP with improved performance characteristics. It is developed on the basis of the Russian VVER-1000 and will have electric power output of at least 1150 MW. The lecturer focused special attention to security issues. According to him, the NPP-2006 project is characterized by the use of additional passive safety systems in combination with traditional active systems: it provides protection against earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, or plane crash.
The second lecture was devoted to the nuclear submarine fleet of the Russian Federation, namely the experience of using reactors with lead-bismuth coolant. A chief scientific officer – Advisor to the General Director of SSC RF – IPPE G.I. Toshinsky told about the history of the Russian nuclear submarine fleet, experience of using lead-bismuth coolant in its reactors. He related effects of the accumulated potential energy on NPP safety and economic performance, the role of fast reactors in the nuclear power industry and basic concepts of the reactor LFR-100.
Foreign students listened intently to the lectures. After it they asked a large number of questions, mainly related to the development of nuclear energy in their home countries.
