The delegation of MEPhI physicists have taken part in the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference, held from 30th of July to 6th of August in the Hague (Netherlands). This prestigious scientific event is held from 1947 under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and is a major forum that brings together scientists and experts from around the world. Different international collaborations aim to present the latest results of their experiments here.
This year the conference was attended by more than 1,000 scientists from various countries and international scientific organizations. Russia traditionally stepped in it. About 30 scientists from leading nuclear and astrophysical centers, including universities and institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences presented results of their scientific work; many of them made content unique presentations.
MEPhI delegation was the most representative among Russian groups – 14 representatives of the academic community of the University came to Holland to tell about their research to the whole scientific world. The ICRC was attended by members of a Scientific and Educational centre NEVOD and young scientists of a Department №7 “Experimental nuclear physics and cosmophysics”.
Employees of the Scientific and Educational centre made 15 reports on the results of studies achieved at a unique research installation NEVOD, including those conducted in the framework of agreements on scientific and technical cooperation with Russian and foreign organizations. Presented research results on muon and neutron component of extensive air shower, and on muon diagnostics of the near-earth space have no analogues in the world and can't be obtained at other existing installations, so they were of great interest of conference participants and aroused lively discussions.
Following the discussion of these reports nine scientists from Germany, Italy and the USA expressed a desire to participate in an International Conference on Particle Physics and Astrophysics, which will be held from 5 to 10 October 2015 in MEPhI to have an opportunity to visit the experimental complex NEVOD and discuss opportunities for cooperation and remote reading of lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University.
Reports of the Department “Experimental nuclear physics and cosmophysics” considered issues of cosmic rays physics, including anisotropy, physics of the Earth's magnetosphere, energy spectra of particles in the radiation belt of the planet, and many others. Young scientists presented 4 oral and 5 poster presentations, prepared on the basis of data from space experiments Pamela and Arina where the Department is directly involved. The speeches of Department representatives interested scientific community and were noted in reporter's announcements.
Following the conference all presentations of MEPhI scientists will be published in a journal “Proceedings of Science”, included in the Scopus database.
Participation in conferences of such a high level gives scientists a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the latest achievements of science, to exchange knowledge and practical experience, as well as to establish business contacts for the future cooperation with major collaborations, scientific and educational centers of the world.
