Head of collaboration NA61/Shine Marek Gazdzicki visits MEPhI
09.07.2015

The leader and spokesperson of an international physical experiment Marek Gazdzicki has visited MEPhI on July 6 with the aim to become acquainted with the University and to hold a seminar on activities of the collaboration.

As previously reported, in late May 2015 MEPhI was admitted into the experiment by an unanimous decision of the Steering Committee of the collaboration NA61/Shine. In this regard the Head of the collaboration Marek Gazdzicki conduct an official visit to the University, during which he met with MEPhI leadership, scientists and students.

The official meeting was opened by a MEPhI rector M.N. Strikhanov. He thanked the Head of the NA61/Shine for the visit and for an additional opportunity to discuss current situation in the field of high energy physics. For a very long time MEPhI is an active participant in both national and international experimental nuclear centers – its scientists make a significant contribution to their development, and students have an opportunity to undergo practice there.

Then Marek Gazdzicki spoke in detail about the collaboration, its partners and goals that now will be achieved jointly with MEPhI. Representatives of various scientific centers and laboratories of the University, including participating in other CERN experiments, listened to the Head of the NA61/Shine with great interest, and then asked many questions.

Also Marek Gazdzicki met with students from MEPhI and the Institute of Nuclear Physics RAS (Troitsk), where he was able to talk with young people – his potential colleagues, and to answer all their questions in an informal atmosphere. At the end of the meeting, he invited students and postgraduates to join a group of scientists from MEPhI, which under the leadership of A.V. Taranenko develop this research direction in the framework of activities of the Department № 67 “Condensed matter physics”.

Presentation slides of Marek Gazdzicki are available on the website of the collaboration.

NA61/Shine (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is an experiment in the field of elementary particle physics at the Super Proton Synchrotron at the European organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The experiment explores the hadronic final states produced in interactions of beam particles (pions, protons and beryllium, argon, and xenon nuclei) with a variety of fixed nuclear targets at the SPS energies.

About 140 physicists from 14 countries and 28 institutions work in the NA61/Shine. MEPhI became the second Russian University which is a part of the collaboration, joining other educational and research organizations: St. Petersburg State University, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna) and the Institute for Nuclear Research RAS (Troitsk).
