MEPhI holds Russian Student Olympiad on nuclear physics and technologies

On May 16-17 MEPhI has held the final stage of the Russian Student Olympiad in “Nuclear physics and technologies” and its winners awarding.

The Olympiad was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”, educational and methodical association “Nuclear physics and technology”, MEPhI Physico-Technical Faculty, with the support of SC “Rosatom”, JSC Akkuyu Nuclear, RosRAO, JSC “TVEL” and Nuclear society of Russia.

Once again the best students of the country came to participate in the competition. Many contestants were in the University not for the first time, thus confirming a growing interest in the Russian Olympiad and nuclear sciences among students. The final round was attended by 104 students from 9 Russian cities, representing 13 universities. It is important to note that intellectual competition was also attended by foreign students from countries that have chosen the path of development of nuclear energy – Vietnam, Turkey and Kazakhstan.

All-Russian Student Olympiad attracts by a variety of technical areas, which reveal the full the range of application of modern science. Thus, the main objective of the event is to improve students’ theoretical and practical knowledge in the following areas: applied nuclear physics; foundations of the theory of neutron transport and nuclear reactors; thermal-hydraulic processes in nuclear power plants; elements of strength physics and fundamentals of materials science.

The winners and awardees of the final stage were determined by the best scores for competitive tasks in individual and team competitions. Following the results MEPhI again showed good results in the field “Nuclear physics and technology”, thus confirming not only a high level of knowledge of its students, but also their potential, creativity and broad-based knowledge.

In accordance with the jury decision the final placing is the following:

the winner of the Olympiad – Andrey Kurakin, Ural Federal University;

2nd place – Nikita Liberovsky, MEPhI;

3rd place – Alexey Frolov, Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

In the team competition places distributed as follows:

1 place – team of National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”;

2 place – team of Ural Federal University named after B.N. Yeltsin;

3 place – team of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.

All-Russian Student Olympiad in physics ended. Winners deservedly enjoyed the success and shared their impressions.
