Open Day of Faculty “Experimental and theoretical physics”
08.02.2015

On February 8 heads and lecturers of a Faculty “Experimental and theoretical physics” have met pupils and their parents in MEPhI.

The Faculty “Experimental and theoretical physics” is one of the oldest and fundamental faculties of the University. Its history originates from the Engineering and physics Department, formed in 1945 in Moscow Mechanical Institute. Today this Faculty is the largest in the University, it consists of 23 departments, 18 of which are graduating.

Addressing to potential entrants the Dean tried to incline them to sometimes difficult, but at the same time very interesting university life, which includes not only lectures and seminars, but also obligatory participation in scientific work. The Dean stressed that the training of students is carried out by individual plans both on the basis of the University and in the branches of the departments located in the leading scientific centers of the country: RAS Physical Institute, National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute”, Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics, RFNC - VNIIEF, etc.

Along with the fact that the Faculty has its own unique experience, modern scientific equipment and the latest computer technology, it also collaborates with the world's leading research centres such as CERN, BNL, DESY, RHIC; postgraduates of this Faculty have the opportunity to participate in scientific experiments ATLAS, ALICE, STAR, Fobos, PAMELA, and many others.

The Faculty pays close attention to high professional training of students. For this purpose, in the framework of the curriculum teaching is conducted not only by well-known Russian scientists but foreign experts as well. One such prominent example is Professor from the University of Kansas (USA) David Besson, who presented that day an overview of the course of lectures on particle physics and astrophysics, which he reads for students and postgraduates of MEPhI.

Employees of departments and laboratories prepared a colorful exhibition where students could not only learn more about the features of the Faculty, but also personally get an idea about the scientific and educational directions of each of its departments.

Representatives of academic departments, graduate and undergraduate students met pupils in classrooms and laboratories, where they told future entrants about departments, student life, showed research developments, demonstrated fascinating and very entertaining physics experiments.

Everyone who wanted could visit research centres and University laboratories.

In the framework of the Open Day there was held an award of diplomas to winners of the qualifying rounds of Rosatom physico-mathematical Olympiad and Pupils Engineering Olympiad. Official summing up of Olympiads and an awarding ceremony of the winners will be held on April 5, 2015 at the Open day of MEPhI.
