From 10th to 13th of April the III International youth scientific school-conference “Modern problems of physics and technologies” was held in the MEPhI. It was organized by the MEPhI, RAS Lebedev Physical Institute and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research.
The aim of the scientific school was to attract young scientists, postgraduates and students to discussion of urgent scientific problems of modern fundamental and applied physics, nuclear and physical technologies, further training of future researchers and attraction of young specialists in science and education.
In total the conference was attended by over 200 people – students and postgraduates, staff of research centers and institutes of RAS. About 40 universities of Russia, CIS and foreign countries sent their delegates.
This event was held for the third time and undoubted interest to it was proved not only by a wide range of higher education institutions, but also by a significant expansion of the participants range: the conference was attended by representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Armenia and Italy.
Opening the conference, MEPhI vice-principal A.N.Petrovsky announced that the strategic aim of the University – the position of a world education leader – can be achieved by creating an integrated triad: education – research – innovation: “This conference brings together all these three directions. We hope science will become a real industrial power, therefore a combination of fundamental and search researches in obtaining concrete results is the way it must develop”.
In the first part of the event leading scientists gave presentations on cutting-edge areas of physics and technology in front of a young audience. They told about modern condition and prospects of science development in these areas. There were presented lectures by RAS academician E.M. Dianov, RAS corresponding members D.R. Khokhlov, professors I.Ya. Arefieva and G.T. Mikaelyan, etc. The Director of the laboratory INFN (Frascati) Professor S. B. Dabagov was invited from Italy. On the eve of the Day of cosmonautics particular interest was attracted to the lecture of RAS corresponding member, astronaut Yu.M. Baturin.
In the second part of the school-conference there were performances of young participants, which was in the form of both oral and poster sessions. Reports covered six areas: Theoretical physics and space physics, Nuclear physics and technology, Solid-state physics and nanotechnology, Laser physics, Optics and plasma physics, Materials science and technologies of production processes, Cybernetics and automatics.
Students, postgraduates and young scientists presented their works carried out in the research centers and laboratories of the Russian Federation, CIS and foreign countries. At all young scientists made 142 reports (including in English), of which 122 were poster sessions.
According to the results of the conference the best reports were defined in five nominations: best oral presentation in Russian, best oral presentation in English, the best poster presentation, for the scientific novelty and for the practical significance.
