On March 29 MEPhI was visited by a delegation of the University of Turin (Italy) headed by the principal Gianmaria Ajani and accompanied by the vice-principal on science Federico Bussolino, vice-principal on internationalization Sergio Bortolani and employees of the Central administration. During the visit Italian colleagues got acquainted with the work of the Nanocenter, Laser Center, Engineering Science Centre and Scientific and Educational Center “NEVOD”.
On the same day there was held a working meeting with the leadership of the MEPhI and representatives of University scientific units resulted in a sighed Memorandum on further development of cooperation between two universities.
Meeting participants exchanged information on main trends of cooperation in scientific and educational sphere, discussed the state of cooperation between two universities and ways of its further development.
MEPhI (Scientific and Educational center “NEVOD”) and the University of Turin (Avogadro Department of General physics) have been cooperating since 1992 in the field of fundamental and applied researches of cosmic rays. For joint researches a unique experimental complex NEVOD-DECOR was created in MEPhI, including the Cherenkov water detector NEVOD (Russia) and coordinate detector DECOR (Italy). The complex NEVOD-DECOR has produced a number of important scientific results.
Currently in accordance with the Agreement of 5 June 2012, a new installation NEVOD-ShAL is created, which consists of scintillation detectors, supplied by the Italian side, which will give an opportunity to obtain new experimental data to solve the problem of observed anomalies in the behavior of the cosmic rays flux at energies above 1015 eV.
Meeting participants highly appreciated results of the ongoing joint work and noted other opportunities for expansion of universities cooperation. MEPhI principal M.N.Strikhanov and principal of the Turin University Gianmaria Ajani minuted their intensions by signing a Memorandum of cooperation, which is focuses on:
1. Continuation and development of cooperation under existing agreements, including the establishment of the NEVOD-ShAL.
2. Expansion of mutual exchange of teachers and researchers for lectures, seminars, carrying-out of research works and preparation of joint publications.
3. Organization of teaching and training for students, postgraduates and young scientists and teachers in laboratories of the University of Turin and in scientific centers of the MEPhI.
