5836! It is the number of young people who decided to apply to MEPhI for their higher education.

This number considerably – by more than 700 people - exceeds that of 2012. The increased interest of schoolchildren to our University is largely due to the fact that the MEPhI has strengthened its leading position in Russian and international ratings. This year our University justified its high status as it became one of the winners of the competition among the leading universities of Russia for the participation in the State program of raising the competitiveness of Russian universities among world leading scientific educational centers. This fact has greatly motivated schoolchildren to choose our University for their higher education. Only 15 most prominent universities of Russia have become the winners of the competition with as few as 4 of them being from Moscow.

This year the competition to all fields and specializations of the University grew considerably. We especially welcome the grown number of applications to such specialization as “Nuclear power plants, their design , maintenance and engineering”. This year there were 150 applications to 15 government subsidized vacancies along with remarkable growth of “customized” applicants to this specialization. This fact is the sign of unquestionable interest of schoolchildren to this one of the most innovational and promising industries of Russia, i.e., .the nuclear industry.

The 2013 admission campaign demonstrated greater competition to enter all the faculties of the MEPhI. The total competition at the “basic” faculty of the University, i.e. the faculty of experimental and theoretical physics (T), has been 1.5 times higher than the previous year and rose to as many as 5 applicants to one vacancy with the highest competition -18 applicants for one vacancy - for the specialization ”Applied mathematics and physics”. The number of people , who want to study at the faculties of technical physics ( F) and automatics & computer science (A) has also increased to 3 applicants for one vacancy.

The faculty of cybernetics and information security has currently become especially popular: this year the competition at this faculty was about 8 applicants for a vacancy, the greatest interest being demonstrated to such specialization as “ Information security” where the competition was as high as 19 applicants for a vacancy.

The results for the specializations of the faculty of management and high- tech economics (U) has also kept high. In 2013 the average competition at the faculty achieved the number of 13 applicants for a vacancy.

This year the University continued to pay special attention to the quality of knowledge of the admitted students and started the experiment of establishing a high threshold minimum for the applicants - the minimal Unified State Examination (USE) result in the subject - at 50-60 depending on the specialization (field). We were among the few universities who have taken such a decisive step, but it attracted greater number of clever young people and , according to the results of our admission board, 273 applicants to the MEPhI have 100 points in one subject, 37 people have 100 points in two subjects and 3 people have 100 points in three subjects.

It is not a surprise that the admission campaign has demonstrated a remarkable growth of the average USE result as compared to the previous year which amounted to 86,53 (79,23 in 2012). At the same time the minimal admission points have grown at all faculties of the MEPhI.

The total admission points for the fields and specializations of engineering physics faculties has grown from 198 in 2012 to 235 in 2013 for “F” faculty and from 200 in 2012 to 240 for “T” faculty. The total admission points at “K&B” faculty have increased by 41 points and resulted in 259; by 26 (240) at “A” faculty and by 13 (245) at “U” faculty.

The geography of admission is also extending. People from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Belorussia, Kirgizia, Tadzhikistan, Latvia, Estonia applied to our university this year. In addition, 79 people of Turkey, 27 people of Vietnam, 4 people of Mongolia, 5 people of Bangladesh will become students of MEPhI this September. Thus the total number of foreign students of different years of education in the MEPhI currently amounts to more than 400 people. The increase in the total number of foreign students is one of the strategic trends of the development of the University.

The campaign for attracting foreign students to the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” was in progress during the whole academic year and the considerable results achieved were the result of joint effort of all the staff and faculty members of the MEPhI. Thanks to this effort the University has acquired the leading positions both in Russia and abroad as well as become highly prestigious among applicants.
