The international ranking agency Round University Rankings (RUR) has published the results of the 2026 subject rankings. MEPhI has taken 4th place among the best universities in the world in the field of “Nuclear Education and Technology” for the second year in a row (in the RUR Nuclear Education and Technology 2026 ranking). MEPhI is the only university from Russia in the top 10 of the ranking. The overall ranking includes 458 universities (for comparison, last year it was 400).

“We are not overly concerned with formal indicators, and any rankings are not an end in themselves for us, but a useful diagnostic tool,” noted Vladimir Shevchenko, Rector of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. “Being included in the top 5 rankings of world nuclear universities is an opportunity to attract the best students and scientists, as rankings serve as benchmarks that signal the quality of education to talented applicants from abroad.”

Vladimir Shevchenko also noted that this result was achieved by MEPhI with significantly fewer resources per student compared to its “neighbors” in the rankings — leading American and Chinese universities.

In addition, MEPhI entered the TOP 50 best universities in the world in the field of “Natural Sciences” (41st place in the world and 1 in Russia), as well as the TOP 100 in the subject area of “Technical Sciences” (74th place in the world and 1 in Russia).

RUR is one of the leading international university rankings and has been publishing them since 2010. Universities were assessed across four main areas of activity: education (40%), science (40%), international activity (10%), and financial sustainability (10%) (a total of 20 indicators).
