The IATE team of MEPhI became the winner of the Grand Final Global Hackatom in Yekaterinburg as part of the 2016 International Youth Festival. The medals were presented to the team by Sergei Kiriyenko, First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation.

Grand Final Global HackAtom is the final stage of an international student championship, where teams develop real solutions to problems from the nuclear industry within 24 hours.

The hackathon is held with the support of the Rosatom State Corporation. Its goal is to promote engineering and nuclear specialties, as well as to provide students with practice in solving practice‑oriented tasks.

The hackathon follows this procedure: first, national selection stages are held in different countries. Winners from approximately 15 countries (including Russia, Brazil, Hungary, Egypt, Kazakhstan, and others) advance to the grand final. In the final, 90 finalists from 15 countries compete in a hackathon format. Teams (of 3–5 people) are given a real‑world case — for example, on managing the construction of a nuclear power plant, developing nuclear medicine, or applying nuclear technologies in space. Within 24 hours, they must propose and present a solution.

In 2026, the grand final will be held in Russia for the second time.
