The XXIX International Conference "Plasma-Surface Interaction" has started at MEPhI
05.02.2026

The XXIX International Conference "Plasma-Surface Interaction" has started at the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI". The forum, dedicated to the key physical problems of controlled thermonuclear fusion (TCF), brought together leading scientists and specialists from scientific centers in Russia and the CIS countries.

The conference, which is held in person with the possibility of video participation, serves as an important platform for discussing challenges on the way to creating a thermonuclear reactor. The main attention of the participants was focused on the issues of the resistance of materials in contact with high-temperature plasma, one of the most difficult technological problems of modern energy.

The program of the event included dozens of reports covering a wide range of areas.:

  • Creation and testing of materials for the first wall and divertor of future reactors, including tungsten and liquid metal (for example, lithium) technologies.
  • Fundamental processes of plasma-surface interaction and modern diagnostic methods.
  • Modeling of processes in peripheral plasma and development of specialized software.
  • Development and application of unique research facilities for testing materials in extreme conditions.

Among the participants are representatives of the Kurchatov Institute, the A.F. Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Nuclear Center of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Moscow State University, as well as Rosatom enterprises such as JSC NIKIET and VNIINM.

The conference began with a speech by Yuri Gasparyan, Chairman of the conference Organizing Committee, Head of the Department of Plasma Physics at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, who spoke about the possibilities of Russian plasma specialists to participate in international conferences.

A separate report at the conference will be devoted to the scientific legacy of the recently deceased Professor of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Professor L.B. Begrambekov.

Some of the best reports presented at the conference, after additional review, will be published in the reputable scientific journal Plasma Physics Reports, indexed in the international databases WoS and Scopus.
