06.05.2025

On April 23-25, the II Youth Conference of the Valdai – New Generation project of the Valdai International Discussion Club was held in Moscow. The forum was attended by Roman Dushkin, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Cybernetics at the Institute of Intelligent Cybernetic Systems at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, and Ekaterina Tikhomirova, Professor at the Department of Philosophy, Ontology and Theory of Cognition at the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.

The main topic of the discussions in which the MEPhI staff participated was the issue of risks arising from the development of AI technologies.

Ekaterina Tikhomirova moderated the 3rd session of the conference dedicated to the problems of artificial intelligence. A meeting of the conference participants with Roman Dushkin was also organized separately, at which the expert tried to "immerse" young people from different countries, many of whom will become future diplomats, in the issue of risks. The topic of the meeting was the modern practice of using artificial intelligence, and above all large language models, and how AI changes people. The expert drew attention to the fact that 90% of the data on which language models are trained consists of English-language texts, and this ultimately cannot but affect the speech of the people who use them.

An important topic has also become the so-called AI nationalism, when many countries, such as the United States, try not to share technological advances in the field of artificial intelligence with their partners.

More than 40 Russian and foreign experts, young specialists, graduate students and graduates of leading universities in the field of international relations from Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, China, Serbia and the Czech Republic took part in the II Valdai – New Generation Youth Conference. All of them have been actively working throughout the year within the framework of the Valdai – a New Generation project, which the Club launched in March 2024 at the first Youth conference "The Valdai Club: the World in 2040", held as part of the World Youth Festival.

For their participation in the conference, MEPhI employees were awarded letters of appreciation from the Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for the Development and Support of the Valdai International Discussion Club, A.G. Bystritsky.
