New Step towards the Creation of Domestic Radio Photonics is Made at MEPhI
05.08.2022

Employees of Institute of Nanoengineering in Electronics, Spintronics and Photonics of MEPhI have created a multilevel model that allows one to correctly describe the interaction of the optical, microwave and electronic subsystems of an electro-optical modulator - the most important device necessary for the development of radio photonics systems.

The study was carried out using deep quantum modeling and verification of the created models. The results obtained allowed othe scientists to reveal a new path for the quantum design of heterostructures that provide both a high electro-optical coefficient and low optical losses.

The results obtained will form the basis for the creation of a domestic modulator for processing microwave signals with a frequency spectrum bandwidth of 30 GHz, and in the near future - up to 100 GHz and higher. In parallel, MEPhI is developing a technological route for the manufacture of the modulator.

Currently, radio photonics, which is a synthesis of photonics, microwave electronics, laser technology and information technology, is a strategic direction for broadband telecommunication systems, including 5G and higher, space communications, and electronic warfare. The use of light as a carrier frequency for information signals makes it possible to significantly expand the possibilities for systems for generating, transmitting, processing analog and digital information with increasing density and signal bandwidth of tens and hundreds of GHz.

The work was carried out within the framework of the subproject "Research and development in the field of integrated radio photonics" of the strategic project "Radio photonics and quantum sensors" of the program "Priority 2030".
