Professor Mikhail Strikhanov, MEPhi graduate, who has gone from a trainee researcher to the rector of the university and his scientific director, celebrates his 70th anniversary.

Professor Mikhail Strikhanov

Mikhail Strikhanov graduated from MEPhI with honors in Theoretical Nuclear Physics, worked as an assistant, senior lecturer, associate professor, professor, and later vice-rector of the university.

After joining the Ministry of Education of Russia, he took an active part in the creation and development of the sphere of nanotechnology in our country: from the formation of the foundations of policy in the field of science and technology development to the development of federal targeted programs. In particular, the decision to create scientific and educational centers allowed more than 30 universities to receive funding and form their own development program.

Returning to MEPhI as a rector, Professor Strikhanov made unprecedented efforts to promote the university. Under his leadership, the university received the status of the National Research Nuclear University and became one of the winners of the competition of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science to increase the international competitiveness of the leading universities of the Russian Federation among the world's leading scientific and educational centers.

Professor Strikhanov created the Scientific and Educational Center in the field of "Nanotechnology" (Nanocenter), which became the base platform for training personnel in the field of nanotechnology for the entire industry. Two university dormitories, in Obninsk and Moscow, were founded, a new laboratory building was built, and the MEPhI temple was opened.

The main areas of scientific research of Professor Strikhanov are nuclear physics, the interaction of radiation with matter, and the physics of nanostructures. He is the author of monographs, textbooks and more than 300 scientific papers. For many years Mikhail Strikhanov was the head of the Russian team of the STAR experiment, a key experiment at the RHIC polarized proton and heavy ion collider.

Mikhail Strikhanov's achievements as an outstanding researcher, talented scientist, and skillful leader have been marked by numerous departmental and state awards.

Today, the hero of the day is the scientific director of MEPhI and director of the Institute of Nanotechnologies in Electronics, Spintronics and Photonics, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Education, Deputy Chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Rectors of Moscow and the Moscow Region.

The university staff cordially congratulates Professor Strikhanov on his jubilee and wishes him scientific and creative longevity, excellent health, talented students and loyal followers, as well as conquering new heights!
