MEPhI held The VI International Summer School on Engineering Computer in Nuclear Technology
16.07.2021

From 28 June to 9 July 2021, Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering MEPhI in cooperation with the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences have held the online International Summer School on Engineering Computing in Nuclear Technology. The ECINT Summer School is held for the sixth time and for the second time in a distance online format.

The Annual Summer School is a certificate course aiming to provide specialized education and training on mathematical modeling of multiphysical processes in nuclear technology. The School program contained plenary sessions with well-known experts in the nuclear energy field, lectures and practical classes. School participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with Russian (MCU, FlowVision) and foreign programs (StarCCM +) used in the nuclear industry.

Every year the number of applications and participants is growing rapidly. This year 162 applications from 34 countries were submitted. Since the School had practical sessions in order to participate in them 60 students, young professionals and postgraduates from 29 countries such as USA, UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Spain, Italy, China, India, South Korea and etc were selected. However, anyone could join the plenary sessions.

The world experts in the field of nuclear technology acted as the invited lecturers. Among speakers were:

  • Dr. Konstantin Mikityuk, Advanced Nuclear Systems group leader, Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland
  • Dr. Hiroki Takezawa, Researcher, Laboratory for Zero-Carbon Energy, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan
  • Dr. Igor Pioro, Professor, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada
  • Chirayu Batra, Nuclear Engineer/Nuclear Power Project Officer (SMR), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Austria
  • Dr. Kostadin Ivanov, Professor, Head of Department of Nuclear Engineering North Carolina State University, USA
  • Dr. Christophe Demaziere, Professor, Lead of the DREAM task force Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Dr. Yann Perin, Scientific staff, GRS, Germany
  • Dr. Manuele Aufiero, Founder, CEO, Milano Multiphysics, Italy
  • Dr. Viktoria Popsueva, Associate Professor, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway
  • Daniil Trofimov, Technical support engineer of FlowVision, Engineering company TESIS Ltd, Russia
  • Natalia Alexandrova, Technical support engineer of FlowVision, Engineering company TESIS Ltd, Russia
  • Dr. Denis Shkarovsky, Head of the Division of Benchmark Calculations of Nuclear Reactors, NRC “Kurchatov Institute”, Russia
  • Dr. Sergey Anpilov, Junior Research Associate, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia
  • Dr. Boris Balakin. Professor, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway

During plenary sessions the speakers have told about the advantages and prospects of nuclear energy, the concept of Gen-IV nuclear reactors, the future of electricity generation in the world, the need to use nuclear energy in the fight against climate change and other important aspects. All lectures of the plenary session are published on the YouTube channel of INPhE MEPhI.

At the School Closing its founder, professor, deputy director of INPhE MEPhI, Georgy Tikhomirov, noted the importance of holding such events allowing the development of international cooperation, exchange of knowledge and experience. In turn, the General Director of the engineering company TESIS Ltd. Sergei Kursakov drew attention to the possibility of further joint projects in the field of multiphysics modeling with the participants of the School and their universities.

At the closing ceremony, participants received certificates of successful completion of the VI International Summer School on Engineering Computing in Nuclear Technology signed by MEPhI and Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, as well as a certificate of completion of the FlowVision basic training course.

The next International Summer School on Engineering Computing in Nuclear Technology will be held in July 2022.
