National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" took second place among all Russian universities. The top-three also included Lomonosov Moscow State University and MIPT. In total, 337 universities were participated in the ranking.

Universities evaluated according to six parameters: educational activity, research activity, social environment, internationalization (international cooperation), brand, innovation, and technological entrepreneurship. For the assessment, they used the data of questionnaires completed by representatives of universities, and information on the educational institutions' websites, the resources of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education as well as in the information and analytical systems SPARK and SCAN.

The National University Ranking (NRU) project has implemented by Interfax since 2010. Among its main goals is the development of mechanisms and procedures for an independent assessment system of Russian universities and their educational programs, increasing the competitiveness of the Russian education system, scientific research and technological enterprise, and the development of federal and regional universities.
