MEPhI holds Fifth International Summer School on Engineering Computing in Nuclear Technology.
10.07.2020

From 29 June to 10 July Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering MEPhI have held online International Summer School on Engineering Computing in Nuclear Technology. The International Summer School is held for the fifth time, but this year for the first time in remote mode. Since 2018, the School has been supported by the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (Bergen, Norway) and with active participation of Professor Boris Balakin (HVL, Norway).

The Annual Summer School is a certificate course aiming to provide specialized education and training on mathematical modeling of multiphysical processes in nuclear technology. The school program contained plenary sessions with well-known experts in the nuclear energy field, lectures and practical classes. School participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with Russian (MCU, FlowVision) and foreign programs (StarCCM +) used in the nuclear industry.

Distance learning format allowed to attract a large number of masters and graduate students from around the world. Everyone had could join the lectures by clicking on the link on the school website. More than 30 people from Norway, the UK, Poland, Italy, Germany, Turkey, France, Bangladesh, Belarus, Egypt, Algeria and Russia connected daily to the online school.

The invited lecturers were the world experts in the field of nuclear technology . Among speakers were:

Georgy Tikhomirov, Dr. Sc., Professor, Deputy director of the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering, MEPhI, Russia

—  Boris Balakin, PhD, Professor, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway

Konstantin Mikityuk, Dr. Sc., Advanced Nuclear Systems group leader, Paul Scherrer Institute, Co-chair of GIF Education and Training Task Force, Representative of Switzerland in IAEA Technical Working Group on Fast Reactors, Switzerland

Igor Pioro, Dr. Sc., Founding Editor of ASME Journal of Nuclear Engineering & Radiation Science, CSME & EIC Professor, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Canada

Francesco D’Auria, PhD, Professor, University of Pisa, member of CSNI, IAEA, ANS, Italy

Manuele Aufiero, PhD, Founder – CEO of Milano Multiphysics, one of the developers of the neutron-physical code Serpent, Italy

Viktoria Popsueva, PhD, Associate Professor, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway

Denis Shkarovsky, PhD, Head of Department of Physics and Energy Modeling, NRC “Kurchatov Institute”, Russia

Rynat Bahdanovich, PhD, Senior Lecturer, Department of Nuclear Physics, Belarusian State University, Belarus

Ghofrane Sekrani, PhD, Postdoctoral fellow, Université de Sherbrooke, Québec, Canada

Sergey Anpilov, PhD, Junior Research Associate, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia

Igor Moskalev, PhD, CEO, Engineering company TESIS Ltd and NEP Ltd, Russia

Tatiana Markova, Technical Support Team Leader, Engineering company TESIS Ltd, Russia

Elena Ovsyannikova, Engineer, Engineering company TESIS Ltd, Russia

The School Speakers have told about advantages, issues and prospects of nuclear power, Gen IV reactor design concepts, current status of electricity generation, nuclear power in the world and other major aspects. Furthermore, the participants have learned the various mathematical methods and techniques for thermal-hydraulic (CFD: FlowVision, STAR-CCM+, ANSYS) and neutronics modeling (Monte Carlo code MCU).

Summer School helped masters and graduate students from different countries to get acquainted with experts in the field of nuclear energy, gain experience working with tools used in the nuclear industry. In turn, it helps strengthen international relations between universities.

The next International Summer School on Engineering Computer Modeling in Nuclear Technologies will be held in July 2021 at MEPhI. More information is available on Summer School website.

School lectures will be available on MEPhI’s English YouTube Channel.
