Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine, MEPhI organized international seminar " Binary Radiotherapy of Cancer: Physics and Engineering ". On May 30, the seminar was held on the Zoom platform; leading scientists gave lectures and were involved in the following discussion.

The seminar was held with the participation of N.N. Blokhin National Medical Research Center of Oncology, Burnasyan Federal Medical Biophysical Center of FMBA Russia, and Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch RAS.

The lectures concerned the clue physical and technical aspects of modern binary methods of cancer radiotherapy including the contrast enhanced radiotherapy, neutron capture therapy and conventional photon beam radiotherapy. In the scope were sources of radiation, dosimetry aspects, clinical applications, nanoparticles as novel contrast agents for radiation treatment of tumor.

Alexey Lipengolts, PhD, N.N. Blokhin Cancer Research Center, Institute for Clinical and Experimental Radiology Research, told about general principles of binary radiation therapy of malignant tumors and compared it with other types of external-beam radiotherapy. In his speech, he also paid attention to physical foundations of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) and the formation features of the absorbed dose in the irradiated biological target during its implementation.

Head of the Laboratory at Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics of SB RAS Sergey Taskaev presented a report on modern technical solutions in the field of creating neutron beam sources based on charged particle accelerators for biomedical applications and gave a detailed description of such sources for the first five clinics in the world designed specifically for BNCT.

Igor Sheino, Head of Laboratory development of methods and techniques of radiation therapy. Burnasyan Federal Medical Biophysical Center, paid attention to the basic methods of calculation dosimetry using x-ray radiation sources and heavy metal preparations as dose-enhancing agents for the treatment of malignant tumors. The method was called photon capture therapy by analogy with neutron capture. The report outlines the regularities and paradoxes of dosimetric approaches, outlines the problems hindering the correct dosimetric planning of photon capture therapy.

Vladimir Morozov , Researcher, Laboratory for Planning and Ensuring the Radiation Safety of Medical Exposure, Burnasyan Federal Medical Biophysical Center, told about the physicochemical principles of using nanoparticles as promising sensitizers of radiation therapy.

The seminar was attended by over 150 people from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Egypt, India and Saudi Arabia. Presentations were designed for a wide range of listeners, including oncologists, engineers, physicists, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

Brief reports by the PhysBio Scientific Director  Andrei Kabashin and the Head of the Center for Nano-Biomedicine Sergey Klimentov acquainted the audience with the scientific agenda of the MEPhI Institute of Engineering Physics for Biomedicine, and future scientific and educational events.

Participation in the seminar made it possible to expand the circle of professional contacts, learn about the current situation in the field of binary methods of radiotherapy, and draw students' attention to the activity area of PhysBio MEPhI and its partners.
