Open Days of Institute for Laser and Plasma Technologies
23.01.2018

In the first month of the New Year MEPhI has started Open Days – presentation events aimed at acquaintance of future applicants with scientific and educational potential of the University.

The Institute for Laser and Plasma Technologies at MEPhI (LAPLAS) invited prospective students on the 21st of January. On this day, the high school students came to a leading research University in the country to learn about the benefits of studying in it.

Talking with the guys who gathered in the auditorium in anticipation of a meeting with representatives of the University, we found that most of them had already known what areas of training the University offers, and some even had choosen their future specialty. Basically it was, of course, students of the MEPhI Pre-university, Moscow engineering classes as well as those who participated in numerous contests and competitions, which are annually held in our University. That day MEPhI provided an opportunity to confirm their choice once again, but for those who are at a crossroads – to get acquainted with the educational programs, communicate with heads of Departments, lecturers and students, to visit the science labs.

Acquaintance with the Institute for Laser and Plasma Technologies started with a welcome speech by the Acting Director A.P. Kuznetsov. He noted that LAPLAS was one of five structural units created two years ago, which replaced the faculties with the aim of uniting education, science and innovation. Therefore, from the very first year of study students are involved in the research projects, take internships in Russian and foreign scientific and educational centers, have the opportunity to learn from leading foreign scientists who come to MEPhI. By the way, the impressions of students and postgraduates on international internships can be viewed on the official website of the University. For example, recently the students of LAPLAS had an internship at PHELIX laser facility in the Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Germany.

LAPLAS carries out relevant researches on advanced areas of science that occurs at the confluenceof traditional disciplines. It is the use of laser, plasma and radiation technologies in various fields of industry, medicine, energy. It is rapidly developing quantum technologies – quantum computers, quantum metrology. Moreover, there are development of new technologies of materials processing, scientists conduct researches in the field of environmentally secured energy based on nuclear fusion, including the creation of compact particle accelerators. "A lot of what we are working on today looks fantastic, but any fantasy eventually becomes a reality," said A.P. Kuznetsov and invited students to a specially organized exhibition of unique scientific developments of the LAPLAS laboratories and Departments.

The responsible secretary of the Admission Commission V.I. Skrytniy familiarized students with the admission rules in 2018. He covered such important for high school students topics as minimum state exam scores, enrollment, entrance exams, features benefits, the main stages of the admission campaign. Detailed information about admission is available on the official website of the Admission Commission of MEPhI.

During the Open Day future entrants could talk with representatives of all Departments that are included in the Institute – seven Departments in Moscow and one in the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering (branch of the University). The staff spoke in details about educational and scientific programmes, scientific researches, strategic partners and career opportunities for graduates. More information about LAPLAS can be found on the website http://laplas.mephi.ru/ and in the group in Vkontakte https://vk.com/laplasmephi.

Presented by the Departments interactive exhibitions such as a lightning generator, digital holography, models of a fusion reactor, levitating vehicles of the future, quantum of hours, accelerating cavity – caused a great interest of school children.

After the official part of the event guests of the Open Day could visit excursions in the scientific-educational units of the Institute. The guys were showed a unique research laboratory – Laser centre, which has no analogues in any Russian university, and a Center for plasma technologies.

We are sure that the young people spent the day usefully. There is a good chance that they finally decided on their future profession and know where exactly to enrol.

The next Open Days of MEPhI will be held on January 28. You are invited by the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Engineering and the Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering.
