MEPhI opens its branch in Uzbekistan

In July, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a resolution on the establishment of a branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI in Tashkent.

The branch of the Russian university will train highly qualified engineering and technical personnel in the field of nuclear power and thermophysics, carry out fundamental and applied research in nuclear physics, develop and implement new educational programs and forms of training, as well as support the development of pedagogical potential.

“The town should become a scientific city. In the near future, we will transfer here other research institutions as well. We will create all conditions for scientists and development of science,” said Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan at the meeting with representatives of the Academy of Sciences and research institutes. The President noted the need to expand the territory of the town, construct buildings for institutions, new houses, schools and recreation places, improve transport system between the town and the capital city center, and build an elevated metro station here. The President of Uzbekistan also said that a grant of $ 100 million will be allocated to support the introduction of scientific research, and the wages of employees of research institutes will increase significantly.

According to the signed document, the branch will start its work in the 2019/2020 academic year. Admission of students and certification of graduates will be carried out in accordance with the requirements, procedure and terms defined by the head institution in consultation with the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The training will be conducted according to the curricula and programs approved by MEPhI.

Graduates of the branch, studying on the basis of state grants, will be distributed to work with the condition of working out at least five years in the organizations of the production and industrial sector of Uzbekistan.

The Russian Federation and the Republic of Uzbekistan began cooperation in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy after the signing of the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in December 2017. Uzbekistan plans to build a nuclear power plant in Navoi region by 2028. The complex will consist of two power units with a capacity of 1200 megawatts each.
