Job Fair - opportunity to build dream career
13.04.2018

On April 6, the annual Job Fair has been held in the University – a unique event that gives students the opportunity to personally communicate with future employers. The initiator and organizer of the event was the Case club of MEPhI - student association, which deals with solving business problems.

The organizers did their best so that each student could find an internship or work that suits them. This year, young people were able to talk with representatives of more than 20 companies, including Rosatom, Sbertech, Alfa-Bank, Russian Federal Space Agency, EY, PwC, Deloitte, Mars, IPG Photonics, Microsoft, and others.

In addition to communication, there were useful master classes, for example, on competent resume writing, writing of a motivational letter and passing a case interview.

Representatives of employers shared their impressions about the Job Fair at MEPhI, as well as gave advice to future applicants.

ZiO-Podolsk:

– For us, the Job Fair is an opportunity to talk and see who is on the verge of graduation from the University, learn their expectations and understand what they want to get from the employer and prepare for the meeting. Today we see a lot of interesting guys, although, of course, not all of them fit us. The guys are interested in career prospects, the possibility of growth, how they can express themselves.

I advise future applicants to be more interested in the labor market, because when students come, they call their specialty and are waiting for proposals. But labor and education markets differs, the employer is difficult to navigate. We look differently:  we are interested not in profession, but what he knows, what he is interested in. For example, you can call your specialty, for example, "power plant equipment", or you can say: "I am a designer, I can work in the following programs." That is, now the guys see themselves by the name of the specialty, and I would like them to turn around and present themselves as specific professionals with certain skills.

Oleg Kolmogorov, VNIIFTRI:

- We are interested in specialists in the field of measurement technology, electronics, physics, and optics. And here, at the Job Fair, I see a lot of good guys. They ask questions, ask about our sphere of activity, whether there are directions coinciding with their direction of preparation, are interested in possibility of passing of practice. It is evident that people are interested, know what they need, what they want to find, ask substantive questions. This pleases. Interestingly, nobody asked about the salary.

Svetlana Razumova, Microsoft:

- This is the first time we participate in such an event in MEPhI. But the University have long been interesting for us, guys from MEPhI work at different positions in the company: both more experienced and relatively recent graduates. For us, MEPhI is one of the target universities, from where we want to see more students, especially at the positions for young professionals.

Today, first of all, we tell about our annual internship, recruitment for which is already underway. The internship starts in September, lasts six months, it is paid and quite serious: guys are working on real tasks within real positions. Therefore, we offer it only to the last year's students or recent graduates. At the end, the best interns have the opportunity to move to a permanent position in the company within the framework of the recruitment of young professionals.

Sometimes among young people there is a misunderstanding of what they want from their careers and what awaits them in the future. Once again this confirms the need for active work with young people both on the part of the University and employers, so that this understanding comes as early as possible, and the guys would be more competitive in the labor market by the time the University graduation. In this regard, some tips for students. The first is to learn English. Second, it is important to be interested in information technologies: whoever they work for in the future, in any case IT will be in their lives in one way or another. It is not necessary for everyone to be a super programmer, but in general it is necessary to understand what information technology, big data, artificial intelligence are, where everything goes and how companies use it for their own benefit. And the third is communication skills, which are important in any position. The more opportunities students have to gain experience in teamwork, preparation and presentations, the better. Later it will be useful at the selection for internship.
