MEPhI and Ain Shams University have signed an agreement on cooperation in the training of nuclear scientists for the first Egyptian nuclear power plant - El Dabaa.

From 8 to 12 April, vice-rector of the MEPhI Tatyana Leonov and the head of Department of international education and cooperation Alexander Nakobov visited the Arab Republic of Egypt within the framework of implementation of joint educational activities with universities-partners.

During the visit, they had working meetings with the leadership of the Egyptian-Russian University and Ain Shams University in Cairo, which resulted in agreements on joint educational programs both in terms of bachelor's and master's degrees, and programs of additional professional education for teachers of Egyptian universities. A great importance will also be given to the academic mobility of teachers who will read individual training courses (modules) at the partner University.

According to Tatyana Leonova, the Ain Shams University will become the basic Egyptian University, which trains specialists for the new branch of the country's nuclear power industry. Cooperation will include both training of students by Russian specialists up to the level of bachelors and continuation of training in the magistracy and postgraduate study in Russia by the most distinguished future nuclear scientists.

"The best of these students will have to work at the nuclear power plant "El-Dabaa". In four years, when the first two units are planned to be launched, 1500 atomic specialists will be needed to serve them. We must have time", said Tatiana Leonova.

Earlier, the head of the State Corporation "Rosatom" Alexey Likhachev told reporters that it is scheduled to start construction of the nuclear power plant "El-Dabaa" in Egypt in 2020.

Four power units of the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant with VVER-1200 reactors will be built according to the Russian project "NPP-2006" — these are units of the new generation "3+" with increased safety and improved technical and economic indicators.

The project was launched on December 11, 2017 in the Egyptian capital Cairo. Then, in the presence of the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, acts which put project contracts into force were signed.
