MEPhI holds first protection of final students’ qualifying works from Kazakhstan

At the end of September, MEPhI has hosted the first defense of final qualifying works of students from Kazakhstan. They studied in the framework of the project “Cooperation “ATOM-CIS” in the Business school and the Basov Higher school of physicists at MEPhI. The project provides training in a magistracy of MEPhI, which is the base organization of the Commonwealth of Independent States on personnel training in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy. Among the first graduates there are than 70 master degree holders, 16 of them received the diploma with distinction, and 4 recommendations to the postgraduate study. Most of the graduates are members of the leading enterprises of the nuclear industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan, including directors of structural subdivisions, heads of departments, chief specialists and senior managers. The leader in the number of graduates is JSC "NAC "Kazatomprom" – the national operator of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the mining of uranium, rare metals, and the production of components of nuclear fuel for nuclear power stations.

The training was conducted jointly with the universities of Kazakhstan: L. N. Gumilev Eurasian National University, Almaty University of Energy and Communications. The agreement on joint educational programmes envisaged that part of the study is held at the sites of the Kazakh universities, some of them – at MEPhI, and also there are remote studies under the guidance of teachers from both partner universities. The training program included practice in leading scientific centres and divisions of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, interactive classes with participation of leading employees of the University on the development of practical competencies. For example, students of the MEPhI Business school atteneded a Business game "Factory of competence" at the end of every practice.

A solemn presentation of diplomas to graduates of the Basov Higher school of physicists at MEPhI was held in the conference hall of the university on the 29th of September. Diplomas were presented by the vice-rector Elena Vesna, acting dean of the Higher school of physicists Igor Yashin, as well as representatives from graduate institutions and departments. Graduates of the Business school will receive diplomas in the partner universities.

The recruitment and training of employees of Kazakhstan nuclear industry enterprises is a part of systematic work with leading international organizations and universities, which MEPhI holds hot for the first year. This work includes joint educational programs, academic exchange of students, preparation of joint applications for grants. The main purpose of these activities is strategic cooperation in scientific, technical and educational spheres for sustainable and safe development of nuclear industries of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan.
