07.04.2017

MEPhI has climbed up 40 positions in the international Round University Ranking (RUR) for 2017 and took 231th place in the world and second one, after MSU, among Russian participants of the ranking.

Russia is represented in the ranking by 67 universities from 30 regions and is on the 4th place in the world by the number of represented universities. For comparison, in 2016 Russia was represented by 23 universities. All in all, 763 universities from 74 countries of the world took part in the RUR-2017 ranking.

MEPhI has participated in the program of state support of universities “5-100” since 2013, said the Dean of MEPhI faculty of advanced training and personnel retraining Sergey Kireev.

“For these years a deep transformation in the system of the university management, education, and science was conducted. In 2016 5 scientific-educational institutes were created in breakthrough scientific directions. University internationalization has grown significantly: today about 20 % of foreign students study in MEPhI, a lot of them are from countries of presence of “Rosatom” state corporation,” he told to RIA NOVOSTI.

Sergey Kireev said that the university has become an international area for large scientific conferences, in which leading foreign and Russian scientists take part. Due to that, university recognition abroad has grown. Thus, for the past 3 years the number of publications in foreign media about MEPhI has grown.

“It is great that these changes in university activity have been reflected in the global ranking RUR 2017, and our university managed to take the second place among Russian universities and 231rd among best universities of the world. The important result of this ranking for MEPhI is high 31-40th position in the world on citation of scientific works. This means that we’re moving in the right direction,” said Sergey Kireev.

Universities in the RUR are estimated by 20 indicators grouped into 4 areas of measuring: quality of teaching (40% of the university evaluation), quality of research (40%), international diversity (10%), financial sustainability (10%).

The Project of competitiveness enhancement of Russian universities "5-100" supposes that 5 Russian universities by 2020 will enter the first hundred of leading universities of the world.
