A mobile app which allows the smartphone recognize the owner by a characteristic movement of the hand, answering the call, is to be developed in Russia.

A team of students from MEPhI Institute of Cyber Intelligence Systems under the supervision of PhD in Technical Sciences Konstantin Kogos and “Kaspersky Lab” employees is about to develop a mobile app InCallAuth for answering incoming calls. The application will get data from accelerator, gyroscope, and light sensor, incorporated in the smartphone. Initial device position, the speed of the movement of the hand with a smartphone, change of the phone position in space are used as parametres. In case the application doesn’t recognize the owner, they will be offered to insert the password. If the password is wrong, it will be Impossible to answer the incoming call.

  • The application is for those who want to protect their private life, not making complicated actions, - comments the InCallAuth developer Alexander Eremin. The development might provoke the interest of mobile phone producers.

The mobile app will only work on ОС Android devices. Other OCs (iOS and Windows) don’t allow third-party applications control incoming calls. The team plans to place ready-made solution on PlayMarket on February, next year. The user needs preliminary training before starting to use it. He will need to launch the app and approach it to the ear several times, as when answering the call. The app will remember parametres and will consider the data for the next incoming call.

The supervisor of the developers’ team Konstantin Kogos explained that the authentication method has been chosen because of its simplicity.

  • Research groups of the Copenhagen University have found out that the hand movement when answering the incoming call is individual for each person, - says Konstantin Kogos. Applications, existing on market with similar functional, have in sum about 20 mln installs from PlayMarket, so there is interest to the call protection. They all require more active user’s participation: enter PIN, graphic password, attach finger etc.

Senior research fellow of the laboratory of machine training and data representation of the Innopolis University Stanislav Protasov thinks that people’s authentication by hand movements and walk is the future, becomes it’s most difficult to counterfeit these parametres.

  • Authentication methods by characteristic hand movement have precision of 95 %, so the error percentage will be small, the phone will be blocked less often than once out of 20 times, - says Stanislav Protasov. The tasks of behavioral biometry are done by many research groups, including our laboratory: we study human identification by walk. Such methods are a response reaction to the fact that classical methods of biometrical identification are easy to be deceived. For example, special glasses can disconcert FRS. It is practically impossible to counterfeit walk or habitual hand movements.
