New basic technologies of intellectual cell and molecular diagnostics of tumours developed in MEPhI
30.01.2017

New basic interdisciplinary technologies of intellectual cell and molecular diagnostics of tumours of blood systems, acute leukemias, at their early stages, have been developed as the result of fruitful cooperation of MEPhI, Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center, and the Institute of advanced training of FMBA. The development corresponds to perspective directions of personalized and translational medicine, as molecular diagnostics is its basis. The technologies have been approbated and incorporated in clinical practice.

The technological platform of the development are integrated hardware-in-the-loop optical systems: optical microscopy at the stage of cell analysis, which determines the type of leukemia (lymphoblastic or myeloblastic) and laser ductal cytofluorometry for immunophenotyping with the usage of molecular markers at the final diagnostic stage of molecular analysis.

The obtained results allowed create and develop intellectual multipurpose systems at the minimum waste of time and finance for their adaptation to concrete conditions of practical application, considering changes of users’ requirements. The results are based on the technologies of artificial intelligence (pattern recognition, knowledge bases, expert systems, decision support systems, digital processing of images, signals and data in practical tasks).

The technologies of artificial intelligence, developed in MEPhI, have been successfully applied in different fields: medicine (systems of automated diagnostics of socially important diseases (histological, cytological, hematological, ophthalmological), decision making support system in intensive-care medicine, immunology, traumatology, neurology, sports medicine); nuclear industry (control of nuclear fuel quality, fuel-element jackets of nuclear energy reactors and welded connections of fuel-element covers in mass-production), in administration (management decision making support system in “Rosatom” state corporation); metallurgy and other fields.

European Scientific-Industrial Chamber (Brussels) qualified obtained results as fundamental in information technologies for medicine and industry, awarding MEPhI Department of computer medical systems (№46) with a golden medal and a certificate of honor.

Chief oncologist of Russia M.I.Davidov evaluated work of the Department of computer medical systems as a perspective direction for Russia, requiring further development. The Head of FMBA of Russia V.V.Uiba highlighted in his review federally important work of the Department of computer medical systems in organization of medical help to the workers of nuclear industry enterprises.

The priority of the development has been confirmed by 12 patents of the RF. 2 Doctor’s theses, 5 PhD ones and 7 Master’s degree theses have been defended; 12 articles, indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, and 5 articles, indexed in Scopus, have been published, following the results of the research. More than 30 reports have been represented at international conferences in Russia and abroad with participation of teachers, employees, students, Master’s degree and PhD students.

The works of the Department provoked the interest of the Head of the Department at German Cancer Research Center (Heidelberg, Germany), Professor Hans-Peter Meinzer. Following the results of his meeting with M.N.Strikhanov, it was decided to create a joint international laboratory as a part of MEPhI Engineering-physical Institute of biomedicine. Сurrently Professor Meinzer is Professor at MEPhI department of computer medical systems. In 2017 he will give lectures for MEPhI students.

The supervisor of the development is the Head of the department of computer medical systems, Doctor of technical sciences, Professor V.G.Nikitaev. The authors are scientists and specialists, students, MEPhI Master’s degree and PhD students of the department of computer medical systems (№46), the department of higher mathematics (№30), the department of electrophysical facilities (№14), Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center - laboratory of hemogenesis immunology, the Institute of advanced training of FMBA - department of clinical laboratory diagnostics.

Hi-tech intellectual hardware-in-the-loop complex of oncological diagnostics “Atlant” (15 medals at VDNKh), according to the Head of FMBA of Russia, application of complex raised early cancer detection at early stage for 16 % in medical units of FMBA of Russia at NPPs of the European part of Russia, for young doctors of Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center (work experience up to 5 years) the precision of diagnostics has grown from 70% tо 95% as the result of the complex application.
