On January, 22 the Day of open doors was held in MEPhI, where entrants got acquainted with the Institute of laser and plasma technologies (LaPlas) and got full information about rules of admission to the university.
The Head of LaPlas A.P.Kuznetsov in his welcoming speech outlined priority directions of activity, a broad range of tasks being solved: the Institute conducts breakthrough interesting research and developments in laser physics, physics of plasma, solid body, radiation and beam technologies. Today, thanks to high efficiency, versatility, environmental safety, laser, plasma and radiation technologies are used practically in all areas of human activity from energy and industry to information technology and medicine.
In 2017 admission to the LaPlas Institute is carried out in five areas of Bachelor’s degree:
3.3.01 Applied Mathematics and Physics
12.03.05 Laser technology and laser technology
16.03.02 High-tech plasma and power plants
12.03.03 Photonics and optoinformatics
14.05.04 Electronics and automation of physical plants
Andrei Petrovich said that the Institute is working closely with leading research centers around the world, students and PhD students are trained in the leading laboratories in Europe, Japan and the United States.
Then representatives of LaPlas Institute departments spoke in front of students and their parents. They presented research areas, projects and research experiments, described the prospects of employment of university graduates.
Head of the department "Physical and technical problems of metrology", Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, director of the Lebedev Physical Institute N.N. Kolachevsky noted that the department trains bachelors and masters in the modern areas of science and technology in the field of precision optical, laser and quantum measurement. Graduates will have an interesting and exciting work related to such areas as the creation of "atomic clocks" for a new generation of GLONASS, the development of modern methods of gyroscopy, etc.
The department "Electrophysical facilities" was founded in 1948 and for 70 years has trained more than 3000 highly qualified specialists, including academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the world-renowned scientists. Graduates of the department work in the largest scientific centers and companies in Russia and around the world: CERN, DESY, LNL. According to Associate Professor S.M. Polozov, undergraduate and graduate students are actively involved in scientific research, showing significant achievements - over the past few years, young scientists were awarded medals of the RAS, the Ministry of Education and diplomas of various conferences.
Department "Plasma Physics" prepares specialists for work in the area of plasma technology, physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion. The department encourages students to work in research groups. Graduates of the department work in leading research centers in Russia and abroad (Germany, USA, Switzerland, Japan).
"Today, there is no branch of knowledge, no fundamental research, which doesn’t use laser and laser technologies," said the professor of "Laser Physics" S.V. Kireev, who spoke about the scientific activities of the department, created by the initiative of one of the founders of Laser Physics, the Nobel Prize winner, MEPhI graduate N.G. Basov.
Deputy Head of the department "Physics of laser thermonuclear fusion" A.P. Kuznetsov spoke about the lasers to study the physics of high density energy and laser fusion.
“Theoretical Nuclear Physics" Department was presented by its Deputy Head, Professor S.V. Popruzhenko. The Chair trains theoretical physicists, people who work very closely with the physical experiment, helping the experimentalists understand what is happening and predict new physical phenomena.
The Head of the department "Solid State Physics and nanosystems", Professor A.P. Menushenkov, told about its features. The department provides the basic understanding of physical phenomena, the properties of graphene and "smart" alloys with shape memory effect are studied, laser technology to produce coatings with unique properties is developed.
The executive secretary of MEPhI selection committee V.I. Skritniy told the students and their parents features of admission to the university in 2017. The basic rules of admission remains the same - there is an opportunity to apply directly to the 5 universities and the opportunity to participate in each of the universities, and the need to overcome the barrier of minimum exam score. In MEPhI this barrier is much higher than in most universities, but the competition every year only increases. The Head of the military department A.I. Korostelev told about the peculiarities of entry into MEPhI military department.
The next Open Doors Day of MEPhI Institute of Biomedicine will be held on February, 5.
