According to the internationally recognized University ranking from the U.S. News & World Report – Best Global Universities-2016/2017, MEPhI has risen from 465th to 411th position. In Europe MEPhI is on the 179th position (last year – 202). Moscow State University (MSU), being the leader among state universities, is 271st in the world and 122nd in Europe.

In addition to MSU and MEPhI, the rating includes four universities: St. Petersburg University (SPBU) – 523 place in the world, 227 in Europe; Novosibirsk State University (NSU) – 535 in the world, 234 in Europe; Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) – 634 place in the world, 280 in Europe; Тomsk State University (TSU) – 938 place in the world, 385 in Europe.

Progress of MEPhI is also reflected in the subject ranking for physics. Here, MSU is the 21st, MEPhI as a leader among participants of the Excellence Project 5-100 – on the 117th place (last year – 127), NSU – 126, MIPT – 238, SPBU – 249.
