From September, 18 to 23 MEPhI and P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute organized the 34th European Conference on Laser Interaction with Matter, ECLIM-2016. The conference, conducted in different European cities from 1966, is dedicated to laser interaction with matter at high power densities, including inertial fusion and associate technologies, ultra intense laser interactions, and laser-driven secondary sources of particles and short wavelength radiation. It allows researchers, students and engineers discuss latest scientific results, represented within the conference, on a rather informal basis.
250 people took part in the conference, including 58 foreign specialists from Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain, Italy, India, the Czech Republic, Poland, Israel, France, Romania, Mexico, Iran, South Korea, and leading researchers from Lomonosov MSU, MIREA, MIPT, nuclear centers VNIIEF and VNIITF, scientific institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences: FIAN, JIHT RAS etc.
Reporters and invited participants of the conference shared their impressions.
Jiri Limpouch of Czech Technical University in Prague:
- My report is dedicated to computer modelling of laser interactions. I have experience in interaction with Russian universities, for example, with Lebedev Physical Institute, I came to Russia for half a year. Moscow has changed a lot since that time, as I have noticed. Russian students come to our country and our university as well. I also participated in joint projects with France, but with MEPhI I haven’t cooperated yet.
Yogo Akifumi, Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka university:
- My presentation is dedicated to abnormal heating of electrons and ion acceleration with high-contrast impulses of picosecond laser, rather interesting results were obtained during the research.
Semerok Alexandre, Университет Université Paris-Saclay, France:
- The session starts from my report on Wednesday, it will be dedicated to laser application in nuclear technologies. I graduated from MEPhI in 1975 from the Faculty of experimental and theoretical physics. I know work in the Commission for Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies, this is Rosatom analogue. We cooperate, 3 years ago I had a student from MEPhI. It is important for the youth to come to science.
Sharkov Boris, FAIR GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany:
- ECLIM is a wonderful international conference. For the first time I participated in it as a post-graduate student about 38 years ago. Today academician Krokhin said that it is the 50th anniversary of the conference. When I first came there, I was astonished. This was magnificent time, the supervisor of the conference was academician N.G. Basov, there was enthusiasm all over, everyone was expecting laser thermonuke. My heart enflamed with science at ECLIM at this time. Today’s conference is very important for young people, they see people, who have come this way. Let their hearts enflame with science! This topic also attracts foreign colleagues’ attention.
Perlado Manuel, Instituto de Fusión Nuclear, Madrid:
My report will be about inertial thermonuclear targets. My university, Instituto de Fusión Nuclear, was founded in 1981. We first came to the ECLIM conference in Russia in 1980. Then we cooperated with FIAN, now with Dubna. I will be very glad to collaborate with MEPhI.
