“Social navigator” project of media group “Rossiya Segodnya” has represented the Russian version of international QS World University Rankings 2016/2017, annually made by QS Quacquarelli Symonds company.
In conditions of growing global competitiveness MEPhI was successful, lifting for 100 positions in comparison with previous year (from 501-550 to 401-410) and became 5th among universities-participants of 5/100 Project (6th place last year).
MEPhI success is even more significant, considering the fact, that, as in the last year, it didn’t account for articles and citation of works, conducted in large collaborations, such as CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory etc., in which MEPhI takes active part.
Annually published QS ranking is a list of leading world higher education institutions, formed on the basis of 6 indicators: academic reputation, employees’ publishing activity, student-to-faculty ratio, employer reputation, percent of foreign professors and foreign students at main educational programs.
Each of the 6 indicators has a different “weight” in calculation of the overall assessment. 4 of these indicators are based on “strict” data, while 2 other are based on the results of large international research (surveys) of scientists and employers.
This year the ranking has been broadened, it reflects 916 universities (25 more than last year) from 81 country, representing results of estimation of more than 3800 organisations.
According to the ranking results, MEPhI has significantly improved its positions in categories, which define the quality of teaching in the university and research activity. In particular, according to the indicator “student-to-faculty ratio”, which is aimed at determining of universities, which are able to best provide for small sizes of classrooms and individual research supervising, MEPhI is the 4th among universities-participants of 5/100 Project (9th among Russian universities).
It should be mentioned that MEPhI shows positive dynamics in the share of foreign teachers and students. These two important indicators of university competitiveness in global educational space show how successful the university is in the process of students’ and scientists’ attraction from other countries of the world. Each of these indicators makes a 5% contribution to the overall result of the ranking.
According to the results, MEPhI is the first in the share of foreign teachers not only among 5/100 universities, but among all Russian universities, listed in the QS ranking. MEPhI is the 6th among universities of 5/100 Project and the 8th in Russia in the number of foreign students.
As QS ranking compilers note, this year Russia has become one of the countries showing outstanding results: 22 Russian universities are in the list, 18 of them have higher positions in comparison with the last year.
