First International Summer School on Engineering Computer Modelling, which was held in the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Technologies (INPT) under the supervision of G.V. Tikhomirov, has come up to an end in MEPhI. In the beginning the event was promoted in 2 areas: through ENEN (European Nuclear Education Network) and regional network “Education and training of specialists in nuclear technologies (STAR-NET)” which became partners in the student assignment.
It should be mentioned that the school was conducted for the second time, but in the first year only Russian students were its participants. This year MEPhI has been visited by 13 students from 7 countries of the world: 8 foreigners and 5 Russian representatives. In a new format, in English language, the school lasted for two weeks, during which the participants got acquainted with computer codes MCU, FlowVision and Fidesys and conducted practical tasks on mathematical modelling of physical processes. On July, 15th they represented results of their work, after which they got certificates of participation in summer school.
As Georgiy Tikhomirov said, the participants faced a difficult, multiphysical task – they needed to use all codes to solve one task. And it turned out to be quite uneasy for perception. Georgiy Tikhomirov claimed: “To tell the truth, no one has solved the task, but everyone has tried to. We hope that students will complete their it at home on other codes. We hope that school has been useful for everyone. For sure, there were difficulties connected with English or foreigners’ presence at MEPhI territory. But it only gave impulse to our development. The questionnaire survey showed that students liked the school. Besides, European students revealed some of our disadvantages which we will try to overcome.” In the end he added that the next year the second English school will be conducted in MEPhI: “There is an agreement with our partners, and we hope that it will be even better and more interesting!”
Nataliya Kolebina, representative of Russian company Fidesys, who participated in training on strength calculation by methods of finite and spectral elements, shared her impressions of the event. According to her words, notwithstanding the fact that this sphere is quite far away from audience’s general specialization and not many participants have faced such tasks before, they have welcomed new methods and have quickly learnt the basics.
“I think that idea of uniting several programs of different direction in one course is interesting and useful, because it allows view one task from different angles. It also helps get acquainted with different programs for a short period of time, which is useful for specialists-beginners,” said Nataliya Kolebina.
Ivanton Ruzenkov, representative of Belarus of “Joint Institute for Power and Nuclear Research - Sosny”, told about time in MEPhI:
“One of the main aims of my participation in the school was meeting with representatives of MCU program, because I use it in my job. And as I have rather large experience in it, I helped my colleagues, who have tried it for the first time, with it. The usage of FlowVision and Fidesys should be considered, they are good and interesting.
I participate in such schools quite often, for example, I recently got back from France. In general, I should say that the school turned out to be interesting and useful. If there is a chance, I will come there once again with pleasure or recommend it to my colleagues.”
