02.06.2016

On the 1st of June the VIII international forum “ATOMEXPO-2016” has ended. The event was held by the State atomic energy Corporation “Rosatom” in Gostiny Dvor in Moscow. The last day of the Forum was declared the Youth day. Students and schoolchildren were given the opportunity to get acquainted with key activities, leading companies, youth programs and experts of the Russian nuclear industry.

That day MEPhI has signed an agreement with schools belonging to the Association of physical and mathematical lyceums of the Rosatom Fuel company “TVEL” from Zelenogorsk, Novouralsk, Seversk and Glazov on cooperation in the field of remote (distance) learning. According to the concluded agreement MEPhI will open access to its distance learning courses and e-library to the schools located on the territories of TVEL presence. Each year the University will allocate 15 quotas for training in its school network. In addition, teachers will be able to undergo refresher courses at MEPhI.

The youth day also included a number of events aimed at discussion of current situation in education, analysis of existing problems, search of ways of their solution, sharing existing successful experiences and development of a plan for further joint work. Thus, representatives of MEPhI participated as experts in the meeting of the Coordination Board of physics and mathematics lyceums of JSC “TVEL”, made a report at the Meeting on interaction between Russian and foreign universities in the field of nuclear education. Those present discussed the problem area and communication issues in the recruitment process of foreign students in the nuclear field, as well as practice of foreign students and development of resource centres of the nuclear industry.

In the framework of the Youth day of the VIII International forum “ATOMEXPO-2016” many activities was conducted specially for students. One of the highlights of the day was student presentations of scientific research on the theme “Nuclear energy as the basis of carbon-free energy mix” in the format of Pecha-Kucha, when participants have only two minutes and six slides for their reports. The competition was attended by 20 people from eight universities of Russia, who tried to impress the competent jury. After listening to all presentations the first place was taken by Evgeny Petkovich, a student of MEPhI. But the jury prepared a surprise: the top five finalists had to perform for the second time – speak offhand, having only 40 seconds. By results of competition Evgeny Smirnov, a student of Moscow Pedagogical State University became the winner.

Commenting on the contest, the head of projects on recruiting young professionals of SC “Rosatom” Nikita Rakov said that Youth day of the Forum was based on successful experience of the last year, when ATOMEXPO had invited students for the first time. Since the experiment was successful, organizers expanded it. In addition to the tours there were a number of events, roundtables and scientific and educational activities, one of which was a competition of scientific presentations.

Also on the 1st of June there was a “Processes Factory of “Rosatom” – joint event of a Corporate Academy of Rosatom and MEPhI. Students, using the tools of Rosatom production system, perfected the process of manufacturing the chairs. The task for the teams was to perform the required number of orders in a certain time. According to a host of the factory Alexander Romashkin, a coach of the Academy, the guys worked very purposefully and with great interest. They saw that the production system really works and were actively involved in the process.

Another interesting event was a Quest-journey into the nuclear industry, which was conducted by the Information center for nuclear industry. The main participants were the students of MEPhI, as well as all those interested in the promotion of the nuclear industry. The game taught to use current knowledge, each stage required skills, logic, creativity. Guys solved unusual problems, looking for answers to tricky questions from different branches of science, at the same time getting acquainted with their potential employers.

It is worth noting that during all three days volunteers from MEPhI – both Russian and foreign students – were working at the VIII International forum “ATOMEXPO-2016”. As Ayman Gazal, a postgraduate student of the second year from Jordan, said the participation in such events provided a very good and valuable experience. And what is most importantly – it is interesting and fun!
