From May, 11th to 12th a meeting of MEPhI International advisory board has taken place, attended by members of the supervisory board of the Project 5-100 and representatives of the university's Board of Academics. The International board was represented by a co-director of FAIR-Russia Research Centre, Hans Herbert Gutbrod, Honorary director of Los Alamos National Laboratory, Doctor Siegfried Hecker, Director of Knowledge E scientific research, consultant of the support service in a regional representation office of Thomson Reuter (Dubai, UAE) Philip Purnell, specialist in physics of cosmic rays and neutrino astrophysics, Professor of the University of Turin, San Martin Oscar Saavedra and President of American University in Moscow, Professor Edward Lozanskiy, who was the moderator of the meeting.
MEPhI rector M.N. Strikhanov has given a welcoming speech to the audience. He expressed his confidence in success and in fruitfulness of joint work on making recommendations in relation to a large-scale activity in MEPhI on the university transformation, especially in international sphere.
The Head of the Direction of the Competitiveness improving program M.G.Ganchenkova has made main presentation about the university speaking of what MEPhI will look like in the nearest future and events, conducted in the university, emphasizing changes in 3 main spheres: human capital assets, international openness and academic reputation, research activity.
International board representatives have pointed out dramatic growth of foreign teachers and students in the university. Experts have discussed the growth of this parameter in ten times.
Doctor Siegfried Hecker compared MEPhI with Los Alamos National Laboratory in difficulties which arise in the process of their development. But, according to the expert’s words, “we shouldn’t underestimate the importance of such changes”.
Then MEPhI represented its strategic academic units: the Institute of nuclear physics and technologies, the Institute of engineering physics in biomedicine, the Institute of laser and plasma technologies, the Institute of nanotechnologies in electronics, spintronics and photonics and the Institute of intellectual cybernetic systems.
On Thursday, May, 12th the Board has continued its work in a form of a roundtable.
