Program testing for making new generation reactors completed in MEPhI
28.03.2016

Computer Engineering Modelling Laboratory on the basis of Departments №5 and 13 together with their colleagues from Obninsk has successfully completed the program check for the “Breakthrough” project using modern high-performance systems. The “Breakthrough” project was organized by Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation for closed nuclear fuel cycle realization in Russia and creation of reactors of the new generation BN-1200 and BREST-OD-300 by 2020.

The codes of the new generation are used as a part of the “Breakthrough” project the development of which was completed in 2015. The codes were developed for modelling of neutron-physical, thermophysical, strength processes, and processes connected with modelling of closed nuclear fuel cycle stages and analysis of safety of each enterprise inside this cycle. New technologies which are incorporated in the closed nuclear fuel cycle enterprises and in BN-1200 and BREST-OD-300 reactors projects imply the usage of new methods for solving tasks of processes modelling in nuclear facilities and at fuel cycle stages. That is why the question of how correct new codes model new generation reactors becomes acute.

The peculiarity of correctness verification of solutions, obtained with the help of codes from the “Breakthrough” project, is that nowadays there is no experimental base complete enough to check programs on concrete real data. To solve the task of program results check scientists applied a cross-verification method. According to this approach the results obtained by different programs, and usually using different method and approaches, are compared with each other. Such method allows to make preliminary conclusions about this program suitability for innovative reactors calculations.

From 2014 to 2015, for 2 years, MEPhI Computer Engineering Modelling Laboratory employees under the supervision of Acting Dean of Physicotechnical Faculty G.V.Tikhomirov together with Department №13 and their colleagues from Obninsk made cross-verification for closed nuclear fuel cycle realization of codes and creation of BN-1200 and BREST-OD-300 reactors commissioned by innovation technology centre “Breakthrough”. MEPhI students and post-graduate students also took part in the project.

A compact supercomputer (128 cores) of Department №5 was used in calculations for some programs. All the deviations were within the limits permitted by the technical assignment.

For one of the programs the development of a new module for modelling of processes of burning out, recycling and transportation of nuclear materials inside the closed nuclear fuel cycle has been started: “Re-breakthrough”, whose author is Department №5 post-graduate student Ivan Salnikov.
