Seversk Institute of Technology MEPhI turns 65 years old
16.10.2024

Seversk Institute of Technology MEPhI turns 65 years old. During this time, from the evening branch of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of Tomsk Polytechnic University, it turned into one of the leading universities of the Rosatom State Corporation.

Seversk, the largest of the closed administrative-territorial formations, appeared thanks to the Siberian Chemical Plant 75 years ago. Ten years later, in 1959, at the request of the Agricultural Committee, a branch of the Faculty of Physics and Technology of the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute was opened in Seversk. Georgy Sheludchenko, a graduate of TPI, became the first director of the educational institution. Together with like-minded people, he laid the foundations of a serious polytechnic education in Seversk, which at that time was called Tomsk-7. Already in 1965, the first graduation of physics engineers took place here and six departments were created: physics, technical mechanics and graphics, mathematics, general chemistry, foreign languages, and electrical engineering.

In 2009, STI joined the structure of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI", becoming part of a large and friendly family of mythologists.

Today, the Seversk Institute of Technology is one of the leading universities of the Rosatom State Corporation. Over 65 years, more than 6,000 qualified specialists have been trained here for nuclear industry enterprises. The Institute is actively involved in conducting scientific research and training personnel for the Breakthrough, one of the main innovative projects in the global nuclear energy industry, which is being implemented at the site of the Siberian Chemical Plant.

The scientific activity of the Institute is aimed at solving the problems of innovative and technological development of Rosatom enterprises. Every year, the institute signs about 25 contracts for the performance of research works totaling more than 100 million rubles. Improvement of conversion production, creation of new types of uranium-plutonium fuel and innovative materials for lithium batteries, development of technologies for decontamination and radioactive waste management, digitalization of production... What scientists are not doing!

Since 2015, the Institute has been implementing the Engineering School project, thanks to which students in grades 9-11 have the opportunity to complete additional technical educational programs and participate in career guidance activities.

Seversk students receive scholarships from the President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, nominal scholarships from industry partners, actively participate (and win!) in the AtomSkills Professional Skills Championship, the All–Russian Engineering Competition, the All-Russian Olympiad for students "I am a professional". Many students of Seversk Technological University not only study well, but also engage in sports, creativity, science, and volunteering.

STI firmly holds leadership positions in the training of specialists of the highest level, creates new technologies and developments, responds sensitively to the challenges of the time and celebrates its anniversary among the national leaders of nuclear education.

We wish Seversk Technological Institute further development and prosperity, its staff and teachers – health and new achievements, and students – new knowledge and excellent grades!

Happy holidays, mythists of Seversk!
