On August 17, Myanmar hosted the First Meeting of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, which was attended by a MEPhI delegation headed by Vice-Rector of the University Dmitry Savkin.
The event was held in the city of Yangon as part of the roadmap for cooperation between Rosatom State Corporation and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar with the support of the Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University of Russia.
The meeting was attended by representatives of Rosatom, ministries and state institutions of Myanmar, Russian universities and, of course, the graduates themselves, who recalled with pleasure the years of study in Russia and shared the secrets of building a successful career (spoiler: the main secret is the high quality of Russian higher education). For example, one of the MEPhI graduates from Myanmar, Zo Min Hu, received the rank of general and headed the scientific center of the Ministry of Defense of Myanmar.
“Your government and our universities have given you a great chance, a winning ticket. But how to use it, everyone decides for himself,” said Dmitry Savkin, addressing the graduates of Russian universities from Myanmar.
More than 500 people from Myanmar graduated from MEPhI. Many of the graduates returned to their homeland and achieved success in their country. This year, 20 Burmese will study at our university: 11 in undergraduate programs, 9 in graduate programs. Today, foreign students have gathered in the conference hall of the university to attend the First meeting of graduates of Soviet and Russian universities in Myanmar remotely.
Note that Russia and Myanmar have a long and successful history of cooperation, especially in the field of education and science, nuclear industry and nuclear energy. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our country and Myanmar (Burma). In September 2022, at the Eastern Economic Forum, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Electricity of Myanmar signed a roadmap for cooperation in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy for 2022-2023 with the State Corporation Rosatom. And already this year, on February 6, Russia and Myanmar signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.
