On February, 5 the Day of Open Doors was held at MEPhI Engineering physical Institute of biomedicine, which gives a unique opportunity to get multidisciplinary education and become a specialist in demand, who has knowledge in physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and medicine. The participants were guests from all over the country.
The key event was the official meeting of Heads of the Institute subdivisions with enrollees. The Head of the Engineering physical Institute of biomedicine I.N. Zavestovskaia told about leading directions of the Institute activity.
- Our Institute was created last year. But at the university there were traditionally nuclear medicine, radiation ecology. One of the tasks of the humankind is the prolongation of life and eagerness to be healthy. To develop sciences about life, we need to develop multidisciplinary directions of training. Students should know physics, chemistry, biology, physiology, anatomy, IT.
Our Institute has 9 laboratories, 10 departments, 1020 students, 310 employees, among which there are 18 scientists of the world level. The policy of the Engineering physical Institute of biomedicine, synergy of biomedicine high technologies with nuclear medicine, the development of methods of nanoteranostics for early diagnostics and targeted treatment of socially dangerous diseases and preventive medicine, and development of new educational programs on the basis of received achievements. We have a suitable basis for it, a medical faculty, on the one hand, and departments, which train engineers-physicists, biologists, and chemists, and medical physicists, on the other hand. The strategy of our Institute in education is aimed at training of engineers-physicists with competences in biomedical and information technologies, and doctors with competences in engineering-physical and information technologies. At the moment, 31 educational program is realized at our Institute, 6 of them are Bachelor’s degree programs, 16 Master’s degree programs, 3 Specialist degree programs, and 6 PhD programs. Programs cover modern questions of biophotonics, nanobioengineering, medical physics, nuclear medicine, computer medicine, general medicine, biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, psychology.
The important direction is realization of joint educational programs with leading foreign universities, incorporation and development of exchange education practice of not less than6 months abroad for our students. They include new Master’s programs, “Nanobioengineering” and “Biomedical nanotechnologies” together with Universities of France, “Biomedical photonics” with University of Ulm (Germany), and “Femtosecond laser physics and technologies” with University of Rochester (the USA).
Our graduates are in demand in science, education, and industry - they work in the Russian scientific centers, Institutes of the Academy of Sciences, universities both in Russia and abroad, as well as in clinics of FMBA, the Russian Health Ministry, Rosatom enterprises and pharmaceutical cluster in Kaluga.
Executive Secretary of the admission campaign V.I. Skritniy told about the rules of admission in 2017 and target figures for the previous year.
- MEPhI is very popular, it is one of the top three universities in the country, so the average score on the exam has grown, but the guys come and Olympiads. A large percentage of enrolled students have a medal and honors. The Education Law allows children from other countries to enroll to the budgetary form of education. Last year they made a good competition with our applicants. It is worth noting that this year we almost switched to continuous education: everyone, who successfully completed the Bachelor degree, can continue their studies in the Master's program.
After his presentation, I.N. Zavestovskaya and other heads of departments answered in detail questions of applicants and their parents. Representatives of departments and laboratories gladly answered questions about educational programs for each activity, and even demonstrated what can be learnt there.
For example, students of the specialisation "General Medicine" showed how to put stitches in the wound. Roman Gordienko, who used imitation for it, commented: " At the Institute we have a study group where we are engaged in similar experiments, we go to the Olympiads. There is a variety of evaluation criteria: it is necessary to avoid diastasis (gaps between the edges); also the speed and quality of work are taken into account." His colleague Roman demonstrates on a dummy, how to do chest and lung compressions. Representatives of the educational program "Biology" offer visitors to guess the plant by its appearance and description, and also look at the microscope that displays the image on the screen. Anastas Kiesel shared learning experience in this direction: "We have cut off the top part of planarians, where there are eyes. They have a very high capacity for regeneration, although the contaminated medium is changed during restoration. Then we make a chart and study the statistics."
Anyone wishing to take a tour to the scientific laboratories of Engineering and Physics Institute of biomedicine, could look "inside" the learning process. The children and their parents saw microscopes at educational and scientific laboratory "Expert systems in medicine", used in histological and cytological studies, learned about the ongoing developments in the field of medicine, international cooperation. Head of the Department "Computer medical systems" V.G. Nikitaev described in detail the scientific directions of the department. One of the most popular areas is the development of digital systems support of medical decisions, based on computer recognition methods. Experts in the field of computer technology medicine are now in demand in clinics for the operation of high-tech medical equipment, as well as in research institutions, that develop telemedicine technology, telemedicine, organizations, providing a large number of data processing.
Tour and discussions with made a favorable impression on the guests of the Institute.
Vylekzhanina Elizaveta, Yoshkar-Ola:
- This is a very important event, which helps determine the further choice, because there is an opportunity to communicate with leading experts and learn more about the future university. It is also important to see with our own eyes, where possibly further 5-6 years of training will be. For me, this is the first open day, and I am excited about what I learned.
Mukhortov Artem, Moscow:
- I have a positive impression of the Open Day, it was interesting. First of all, I will consider the department "Computer medical systems" for admission. It is also good that we should not take biology.
Anna Kartoshkina, Moscow:
- I liked today's event, I plan to come to the general Open Day MEPhI, which will represent all departments. This Institute is a priority for me, it is necessary to bring something to life! Now I study at the Lyceum at MEPhI, so I have visited the tours more than once.
