MEPhI Institute of nuclear physics and technologies is first to welcome entrants this year
19.01.2017

Last Sunday about 200 schoolchildren gathered in MEPhI event hall. There the Open Doors Day of the Institute of nuclear physics and technologies (INPT) was held, where future entrants could learn about directions of training in the Institute, news of 2017 admission campaign, talk in person to university scientists and students.

Acquaintance with INPT began with the welcoming speech of the Head N.S. Barbashin, who noted that the Institute today is a unique scientific and educational platform, which trains professionals in demand, and then gave the floor to the Deputy Head G.V. Tikhomirov.

At the beginning of his speech, G.V. Tikhomirov highlighted that, following the results of the competitive selection of the RF Ministry of Education and Science in 2013, MEPhI joined the "major league" of Russian universities, having task to enter the first hundred of the leading higher education institutions in the world. And the University is successfully coping with this task. Currently MEPI is in the top 100 of world universities in subject rankings, and in the top five universities of the country in national rankings. It shows that the university is now recognized internationally as a leading research and educational world-class centre.

Educational activity at MEPhI is based on three key concepts: education, science and innovation, the unity of which is provided on the basis of institutions, established in 2016. Following MEPhI traditions since its establishment, the basis of educational training at the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Technology is a combination of fundamental physical and mathematical training and engineering competences on the basis of international standards.

In 2017, the admission to the INPT is carried out in three areas of Bachelor degree specialisations:
14.03.01 Nuclear power and thermal physics
14.03.02 Nuclear Physics and Technology
22.03.01 Materials science and technology of materials

and in three specialisations:
05.14.01 Nuclear reactors and materials
14.05.02 Nuclear power plants: design, maintenance and engineering
14.05.04 Electronics and automation of physical plants.

The advantage of the Institute is its active involvement in collaborations with leading international nuclear centers and participation in mega-projects, as well as joint research with institutes of RAS, "Rosatom", "Rostec" and others. In this case, students are directly involved in research and development, since their 3rd year, conduct international internships at research centers and laboratories around the world, represent results of their research at the largest Russian and international conferences.

The Institute of Nuclear Physics and Technology includes leading departments of the University, training of specialists in the field of nuclear technology and operation of nuclear power plants, development of new materials, astrophysics and high-energy physics, combined in three research centers: Atomic Energy Center, Center "Nuclear systems and materials" and the Center "Fundamental research and particle physics."

Representatives of the Center "Nuclear systems and materials" Professor B.A. Kalin and of the Center "Fundamental research and particle physics" Associate Professor K.M. Belotskii told students about directions and specialized training, scientific research, strategic partners and career opportunities for graduates.

Then there were young teachers, PhD students and students, who talked about how they see education in MEPhI. They mentioned scientific publications, participation in joint projects in international research centers, communication with the world's scientists and just an interesting student life.

In the course of the meeting, the deputy chief of the military department, Colonel S.I. Mezhuev told about the peculiarities of the entry to the military department, which now provides training in three areas: reserve officers, sergeants and reserve privates in specialties, related to the main activity of MEPhI.

Executive Secretary of the selection committee VI Skritniy presented some figures of the admission campaign of 2016, so that students could understand what they should expect this year. A positive feature of the previous year admission was an increase of talented children - 45% of the enrolled ones had a certificate or a diploma with honors, and 35% were winners of Olympiads.

After the official part of the event excursions to the scientific and educational divisions of INPT were organized for students and their parents.

On the same day the qualifying " round of the Rosatom" Olympiad (Contest named after Academician Kurchatov) in mathematics, which is in the list of the Olympiads of 2016/2017 academic year, was held in MEPhI. The winners, eleventh-form schoolchildren, will get special rights for the admission to universities in 2017.

On January, 22 the Open Day of the Institute of laser and plasma technologies will be held.
