MEPhI starts Admissions
17.06.2015

From the 15th of June, a few days earlier than other universities, MEPhI has started the Admission campaign. In connection with a new order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation Admission Rules has undergone substantial changes in 2015 and, of course, University entrants have a lot of questions. How do this year Admissions differ from previous years, what innovations are prepared for applicants – a Pro-rector for Educational Affairs Elena Borisovna Vesna told about all these issues.

– Elena Borisovna, the Admission campaign has a number of significant innovations. What are they?

– Enrollment procedure was changed. Now there are no lists of recommended for admission, and enrollment will be conducted in 2 stages: the first stage includes all applicants who submitted original documents – from the beginning to the end of the list that to fill 80 % of the competitive places; the second stage is 20 % reservation for enrolment of applicants. It should be noted that no one will quit the competition at the first stage.

A category of applicants eligible to pass an internal entrance exam was removed (there is no longer a category “people received a document evidencing reception of General secondary education before January 1, 2009”).

In addition to the main enrollment there are allocated budget places for people permanently residing in Crimea. They have an individual deadline for documents submission, completion of tests and admissions. Entrance tests for Crimeans include Russian language (interview) and math.

Proportion of enrolled masters students were increased with regard to the development programme of the University.

And for the first time individual achievements will be taken into account in the form of additional points (last year's achievements were considered in case of ceteris paribus). Points, confirming results of individual achievements, will be added to the total amount of applicants’ points. Entrants can receive it for a school honour certificate, participation in final tours of listed Olympiads, for some sport achievements or volunteer activity. Additional points will be summarized but in total it cannot exceed 10.

– What are minimum points of Unified State Examination for admission to the MEPhI?

– I suppose you mean minimum points for the reception of documents in MEPhI, but not for admission. This number, as in the past year, depends on the chosen by an applicant specialty. A full list of minimum scores for all specialties can be found on the website. In general I can say that at least these points are not less than it was last year, and in a number of fields even exceed it: for example, in “Nuclear physics and technologies” and “Electronics and automation of physical installations” a minimum score in physics increased from 50 to 52, in “Physics” a minimum score in physics increased from 55 to 57, in math – from 55 to 60.

As for admission points, it will be determined by the end of the Admission campaign, when scores of all applicants will have been known.

– The University participates in a Program of competitiveness increase and is fighting for recognition in the global educational community. Today MEPhI confidently occupies high positions in Russian and international ratings. How will students, who will enter the University this year, benefit from it?

– Active participation of MEPhI in the Program of competitiveness increasing enables our students to receive an education corresponding to international standards; to undergo training in the leading universities – MEPhI partners; to actively participate in major international research programs conducted jointly with leading Mega-science centers: CERN, National laboratories of the USA, DESY (Germany), KEK (Japan), ITER (France), etc.

– Elena Borisovna, what would you like to wish students?

– I would like to wish all the students to pass exams successfully and become students of MEPhI – one of the best universities in the country!

The University is among the top 100 universities in the world according to leading global rankings THE and QS: in the field of “Natural Sciences” and “Physics and astronomy”, and is in the top three universities of Russia, taking the 2nd place in the ranking by “Interfax” and “Echo of Moscow” and the 3rd place in the rating RAEX (“Expert RA”).
