Meeting of MEPhI youth activists with University’s administration

On the 1st of June MEPhI has held a meeting of a university’s administration with youth activists. Young teachers, scientists, postgraduates and students enthusiastically responded to a call of the leadership to openly discuss topical issues – an Assembly hall could hardly accommodate all those wishing to attend the meeting.

The main message of the event was a need for joint discussion of problems and achievements of the University, as well as consideration of specific proposals to work out effective strategy for further MEPhI development. To this end the most active and enterprising young people were invited to the meeting – winners of contests “Young teacher”, “Best postgraduate student”, “Best student”, as well as representatives of the MEPhI United Council of Students. Administration was represented by MEPhI rector Mikhail Strikhanov, pro-rector for educational and methodological affairs Elena Vesna, pro-rector Anatoly Petrovsky and heads of major divisions of the University.

“Today our University has an important task”, said Mikhail Strikhanov. “It is caused by the fact that the University has joined a serious competition for leadership in the global higher education system, and this task is extremely difficult. It can be achieved only by combined efforts of all employees – administration, teachers and scientists”. The rector emphasized that youth is a key element in fulfillment of University's objectives. In a short time they will take up teaching, research and leadership positions in the University.

Director of a Programm of competiveness increase Maria Ganchenkova presented Program results, which main purpose is transformation of the University into a modern higher education institute of an international level. She noted that a number of significant results had been achieved that allowed MEPhI to occupy high positions in Russian and international ratings.

To preserve and enhance University status at the global level, it must focus on various areas, one of which is talented young employees and their development. The program of competitiveness increase provides considerable support to students and young scientists. It includes acquisition of necessary scientific equipment and training in leading Russian and foreign centers.

Maria Ganchenkova informed that the University plans to implement a number of measures aimed at creating a world-class University. Among main of them are conducting of strategic sessions together with representatives of SKOLKOVO, who are ready to assist in identification of prospective reserve among MEPhI youth activists. In the future this team will directly participate in the development of the University’s strategy.

During the meeting, which lasted about three hours, students were able to ask the rector and administration all questions, gave suggestions to improve educational and scientific work of the University. MEPhI rector M.N. Strikhanov assured activists in complete and absolute support of all positive initiatives.
