National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” has entered the top 100 of a subject rating QS-2015.

Results of the QS Subjects-2015, released on April 29, reflected a positive trend of a number of Russian universities, including MEPhI, which reached one of the most prominent indicators. The University rose from the third to the first hundred of world universities in field of “physics and astronomy”. Now situation is the following: MSU – 36th place, MEPhI – 51-100, NSU – 101-150, SPbSU and MIPT – 151-200, TSU – 301-400.

In all, the QS Subjects-2015 includes 10 Russian universities, 4 of which reached the top 100. To put in perspective, last year only MSU and SPbSU were in the top 100.

Later there was a video link Moscow–Novosibirsk–London, which was devoted to several topics: what contributed to the improvement of results, shown by Russian universities in the QS Subject, their prospects, and key trends of the global market of education.

QS representatives linked success of Russian universities with the fact that “science is developing now, Russian scientists become more disciplined and properly attribute their scientific articles”. In addition, a key difference of a subject rating from a global one is other indicators and criteria. Universities were evaluated according to four criteria: opinion of academic community and employers, citation index of an article and Hirsch index, which assesses contribution of a scientist in science. Moreover, according to experts, this year reputational indicators were reviewed for the last five years but not three as it was previously.

The MEPhI rector Mikhail Strikhanov expressed an opinion that Russian universities needed to participate in global rankings, because it is an independent evaluation among Russian universities. And subject ratings are even more competitive for Russian universities due to their rather narrow focus. “Expert evaluation constitutes 60 percent of a subject rating, that is, in fact, we are in hands of objective and strict international experts”, said the rector urging Russian expert community to get more involved in it. “Russian experts have to understand that they are participants of the global educational process too, and their opinion influences on the position of our universities in the world rankings”.
