On April 5 more than one thousand students have visited an Open Day of the MEPhI, confirming naturally growing interest of young people to the leader of the national higher school, which second year in a row worthy represents Russia in the world rankings.
MEPhI was intensely preparing for this day, trying to convey not only the maximum information, but also a unique corporate spirit of the University to students.
Traditionally information centres of faculties were arranged in the reading room of the MEPhI scientific library and several other sites, where guests had an opportunity to talk with students and representatives of academic departments. In the Rosatom career center they could have a consultation on employment prospects at the enterprises of the nuclear industry.
Later pupils were offered to have trips to research labs, centers and legendary Departments of the University, founded by luminaries of the world of science. Schoolchildren expectedly expressed great interest to entertaining experiments in physics and chemistry.
The official event was opened by the vice-rector of MEPhI A.N. Petrovsky. Anatoly Nikolaevich noted achievements of the University in the past year, which had been reflected in Russian and world rankings, and stated that the strategic goal of the University – to become a global leader in education, science and innovation – is real and possible today. “It’s an issue which we will solve together with you – future students of our University”, said the vice-rector, approaching those who came to the Open Day. “You will be directly involved in this interesting and important process, since only being a single team, which includes administration, teachers, scientists, engineers, and, of course, students, we can solve the challenge of global leadership”.
The representative of administration told senior students and their parents about the history of the University, scientific and educational departments, presented key partners and employers. “It’s hard to study in MEPhI, but the education received here will allow you to unlock your potential, you will be able to find yourself in various fields – in science, in government service, in business”, concluded A.N. Petrovsky.
The vice-rector on educational and methodical work of MEPhI Elena Vesna stressed that education that the University provides for its students is fully consistent with international standards and MEPhI diploma is recognized around the world. According to the Head of the educational Department, University graduates always achieved considerable heights in the career. Today, when the MEPhI has joined the program of global competitiveness increase, even more opportunities are offered to students. It involves getting a “double degree”, participation in international internships, conducting joint research with foreign colleagues, etc.
A lot of famous people, occupying high positions in the largest companies of Russia and who once graduated MEPhI, said parting words to young people. But words in favor of MEPhI from recent University graduates were more convincing. Now they are working at the world-renowned research centers. Here we should mention that 60% of Russian scientists working at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are MEPhI alumni. Many of them have participated in recent fundamental discoveries.
MEPhI Deans briefly spoke about their faculties, wished students to make the right choice of future profession.
The event included rewarding of winners and prize-winners of different Olympiads. Prizes to the winners of the Rosatom physical and mathematical pupils Olympiad and Engineering pupils Olympiad were presented by the head of the Rosatom Career Center A.B. Lyakhov and the Head of the Olympiads Office of the Training Department C.E. Muraviev.
Then Executive Secretary of the MEPhI Admission Committee V.I. Scrytny informed about significant changes in enrolment rules. In particular, this year the concept of “wave” is abolished and enrollment will be held in two “stages”, during the first of which 80% of the applicants will be enrolled.
An important novelty is that for the first time it’s permitted to consider individual achievements of applicants (including their participation in the List of Pupils Olympiads) with further addition of scores for that.
After that V.I. Scrytny described the main stages of the admission process, which traditionally will be fully reflected on the official website of the University.
