The Higher School of Economics conducted another "Monitoring of the quality of admission to universities." The results surprised many: it turned out that in 2024, engineering education became the main driver of university enrollment for the first time. The rector of MEPhI, Vladimir Shevchenko, commented on the situation.
the survey showed that last year 0.6% more applicants were enrolled in budget places than a year earlier – 337,205 people. At the same time, the overall average score of the Unified State Exam also increased to 70.2.
. According to data provided in the HSE monitoring, more than half of the top twenty leaders in the quality of admission to universities are technical universities with engineering schools. The first three places were taken by MIPT, MEPhI and Innopolis University. Total enrollment in engineering increased by 7% compared to 2022, from 213,548 to 228,567 in 2024. In general, in 2024, the share of first-year engineers in the general admission structure was 41%.

In our country as a whole and at MEPhI in particular, systematic work is underway to increase the prestige of engineering specialties. Moreover, MEPhI believes that interest in physics should be instilled from early childhood. Last year, our university, with the support of the Rosatom State Corporation, opened the Kvant Engineering Competence Development Center, where future engineers... over the age of four are engaged. MEPhI organized the first All-Russian Olympiad for physics teachers, the League of the Best, which helped encourage the ost interested, creative, professional teachers, inspire their colleagues, and, experts hope, will help improve the quality of physics teaching at school and, as a result, increase the number of highly qualified specialists, physics engineers, without whom it is inconceivable. technological sovereignty of the country. The X All-Russian Engineering Competition was successfully held, for which over 10,500 applications were submitted! The Advanced Engineering Schools project is actively developing, aimed at training highly qualified engineers of a new generation. There is a growing demand for such specialists in large companies and large industrial enterprises.
"Today there is a high demand for high-quality engineering education. This was fully reflected in the results of admission to the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. In 2024, the MEPhI admission campaign ended with record results. The average score of those enrolled in the general competition was 95.7, and the average score of all those enrolled, including preferential categories, reached 94.12. MEPhI is one of the leaders among Russian universities in terms of the quality of total admission (2nd place according to the results of budget and paid enrollment), and also holds a leading position in the ranking of technical universities in terms of the quality of enrollment. I would especially like to note the increase in the average score of the Unified State Exam in Nuclear Physics and Technology. The competition for this area has become equal to the competition for traditionally popular IT areas," Vladimir Shevchenko commented on the monitoring results.
