In the year of the 80th anniversary of MEPhI, Department of Electrophysical Installations celebrates its 75th anniversary. The department was established in 1948 as part of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. But in 1951, by a decree of the USSR government, the department was transferred in full force to the Moscow Mechanical Institute (now MEPhI).

Since its inception, the department has trained and graduated more than 3,500 specialists who have worked and are working in all accelerator centers in Russia and in the best laboratories in the world. The department has been awarded awards from the USSR and Russia, and has many scientific discoveries and achievements to its credit.
In 1958, professor of the department Pavel Cherenkov, together with academicians Ilya Frank and Igor Tamm, was awarded the Nobel Prize "for the discovery and explanation of the effect of Cherenkov radiation." In 2005, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the IAEA team, which included graduates of the department Vladimir Gusarov, Nikolai Kornev and Andrey Pryakhin.
